Coffee and Estrogen Levels

Coffee and Estrogen Levels

In yet another look at potential adverse health effects of coffee, an article in the October 2001 issue of the journal Fertility and Sterility reports that drinking four or five cups of coffee daily raised estrogen levels in the blood of women.

Almost 500 women aged 36-45 years were given a questionnaire about their health habits and gave blood samples. Only in women over 40 was an effect seen. Drinking more than one cup of coffee daily modestly increased estrogen levels. But so did smoking, drinking more than one alcoholic drink and eating above average amounts of cholesterol.

HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Higher estrogen is linked to greater risk of breast and uterine cancer. In fact, the U.S. government lists estrogen as an agent expected to be a carcinogen. To confuse you more, the drug tamoxifen, which is an anti-estrogen, is listed as a known carcinogen. Higher estrogen is good for bone density. It is truly difficult to determine how important the changes in estrogen are and whether coffee or caffeine is responsible. Coffee has been consumed for so many years that if it greatly increased risk for any disease, it would likely have been found by now. The usual advice of not overdoing intake of anything should rule. 02.15.02
