In Columbia Coke mfg. plants the working conditions are horrible. Apparently coke isn't satisfied with their 95%markup on sugar water so they had to move some of their production out of the country. One location, Columbia, is one of their plants. Tired of being worked to the bone for pennies a day, the employees have desparetly tried to better themselves by creating a union. However labor laws are way nothing like they are here, and enforcing what they do have is something else. Realizing the companies bottom line could be hurt, Coke executives have ordered the deaths of several union activists. It is documented that several deaths have happened thus far. In fact there is currently a lawsuit dealing with this, but you'll never hear about it most likely. It has not been proved that the Coke executives ordered the deaths, but that is the basis of the lawsuit. And of course Columbia isnt taking a stance because they dont want Coke to pull out of their country. So even though it hasnt been officially proved, who the hell else would be doing it? Probably the local tribesman im sure! So here we are faced with a leader that is big time anti-union and attempting to break the unions(and succesfully done so with homeland security to some degree in which employees have been stripped of their right to collectively bargain. Another story, a recent letter from Tom Ridge has been uncovered that states "unionism"is a threat to homeland security and must be dealt with. Of course he denys knowing anything of this, even though his signature is at the bottom! In my opinion, one of the biggest underlying reasons for the homeland security dept was to bust the federal union. Now its being underfunded????and on top of that 1000's of positions will be eleminated. hmmmm??) and underfunding any worker protection programs like osha and the NLRB. Are we next? Obviously im pro-union. Im not so stupid however that I dont realize unions cause problems also. However with "greed" involved we only have 2 choices. It's either me or them, and ill pick me everytime thank you very much. The whole country benefits from good management relations/unions when everyone can mostly agree. Even the World Bank came out recently and said so. That was a real surprise! And for those that think unions arent needed, take a look at your union counterparts. The only reason you are fairly compensated is to keep the threat of unions away. Without them there is no threat and your wages and benefits will lower to that of 3rd world countries. The moral of my story: Dont trust big business, they are not your friend.
Another tidbit on Coke: Substandard products(like shit that has set around to long or bad batches, etc) are shipped off to poor areas of the US where the consumers opinion is invalid. This is just one example, there are many other companies also involved in these activities.
