CKD & refeeds and other diet questions

Millie,

For a woman with that low of bodyfat, you need to be doing refeeds pretty frequently. I would suggest at least 1 day for every 4 days of dieting, 1 for every 3 would probably be better.

I agree with Par Deus. The last few weeks pre competition I'm doing high carb feeds twice a week. When I start my diet (10-12 weeks pre comp) I only have a refeed once every 10-14 days. Of course I wasn't using a CKD, and everbody is different. But there's no doubt in my mind that you should be carbing up MORE frequently, not less. You might even consider changing your diet all together. Your body may be adapting to this type of diet, and a change may just shock it into action again.

Hey Millie,
Just one thing I would stress......i know CKD diets work well for many people, but recently experts (Lyle MacDonald and Par Deus, to be specific) are finding that there is nothing special about ketosis.....rather, the carb-up, or refeeds are what makes CKD type diets work.....some bodybuilders (like Mr. X) find ketosis muscle sparing due to hormonal advantages of the CKD diet, but many people, like myself find that they lose a great deal of muscle and strength on a CKD diet....I'd stress the refeed more.......on low carbs you'll look lean after many days of dieting since you'll have no glycogen and water weight on you, but overall i'd keep carbs in check and keep your refeeds more frequent.....(listen to Par Deus, he is the man)

BTW, for a woman your bodyfat is quite low already!

Just to make sure were on the same page...you're referring to her doing the refeeds while following an isocaloric/zone type regimine with cycling periods, right? Sort of like how you mentioned in the past about what Lyle was doing/experimenting with nowadays?

Hey Par Deus, just wanted to say that I really like your site. Great job man! I've only had time to skim over it, but was pretty impressed with the what I seen and the way you're going about it....Had a big bowl of Tortellini and the insulin response hit me about the time I entered the site...So, i'm sure you know what I am saying.

Not exclusive to isocaloric diets, I just think they are probably more effective than no-carb diets (assuming you can control caloric intake), thus that is what I (and Lyle) had been most recently experimenting with.

"Refeeds" to just refer to any purposeful high-calorie/high-carb period with the intent of increasing leptin levels while on a diet.

And, actually, I think they could be used on a modified bulking diet as well, for someone who really did not want to accept fat gain. Basically, a maintenence diet with a refeed thrown in for 12 hours every other day, or a full day refeed every 3 days.

Thanks guys!

All your responses and all your input is really helpful and very much appreciated.

MS, I think that my body has sort of adapted to this kind of diet, and this was the first question in my initial post of this thread :). As a woman, what c/p/f percentages would you say are most appropriate both for leaning out and maintaining?

thanks again to all of you for the feedback :)

Hey thanks Par Deus! Gotcha! Yeah, i've always thought about the same thing as far as bulking and leaning up, it just makes sense. The only thing that really ever prevented me from eating like this (although with the irregularity of eating patterns...eating little one day and eating lots the next some people "sort" of do it anyway) was the fact that I would have to prepare a few different eating patterns for each phase, and that meant I had to use my brain a little more...lol. Since I respond to CKD's so damn well, I would usually do some sort of isocaloric/zone type diet as long as I could and then finish up the last few weeks with a CKD. I think i'll have to prepare myself in advance for a 'cycling' type regimine for the spring when I get ready for summer,, etc. I'm pretty pumped up about this way of eating. I'll try and throw together a scheme within the next 2 months (or before my next semester) and put it on here for everyone to dissect. Even though I didn't state it, I was awaiting comments from both you and MS...thanks:)

Millie, one thing you'll have to be careful of for the first week or two, is to make sure you keeps the calories debited to some degree when changing your eating patterns from a CKD over to a carb containing regimine. This will prevent any kind of rebound. Fat gain should be null as long as you are not over maintenace though. The only thing you might receive is a little more water weight (maybe) from the increase in carbs. CKD's are great for getting rid of the extra water, and to some degree a little will probably naturally increase and come back. So don't get this mixed up with fat gains. From a woman's perspective, you definately got the female you want to listen from on your side...MS. I sound like a broken record, but she is really knowledgeable, and it helps guys like me to get a handle on female dieting. Par Deus I know would say the same, which by the way I have never really talked to him, but is another knowledgeable person to learn from.

Thanks for the compliment millie. BUT, I should point out that YOU make it easier on others to work with YOU because YOU have done your homework to some degree on how different things work. Therefore, because of your OWN dedication, its not anyone on this board that is making you succeed, its yourself...we hopefully just compliment your success on this board. SO, thank-YOU for making it easier. You are almost to your goal, just hang in there.
