Christ is Risen

Do you believe in God, Andrei?
No.
Neither do I. But that's a favorite question of mine. An upside-down question, you know.
What do you mean?
Well, if I asked people whether they believed in life, they'd never understand what I meant. It's a bad question. It can mean so much that it really means nothing. So I ask them if they believe in God. And if they say they do -- then, I know they don't believe in life.
Why?
Because, you see, God -- whatever anyone chooses to call God -- is one's highest conception of the highest possible. And whoever places his highest conception above his own possibility thinks very little of himself and his life. It's a rare gift, you know, to feel reverence for your own life and to want the best, the greatest, the highest possible, here, now, for your very own.

LOL. Someone is taking a sophomore philosophy course;)

So for the rest of the semester will you be preaching the joys of radical selfishness bor. The root of all evil being atruism.

The self proclaimed "greatest philosopher since Aristotle" Of course she died miserable and friendless.

"And whoever places his highest conception above his own possibility thinks very little of himself and his life. It's a rare gift, you know, to feel reverence for your own life and to want the best, the greatest, the highest possible, here, now, for your very own."

Cute, but irrational. Ones self reverance, as well as reverance for his neighbor, is only increased when he acknowledges life as more than an accident of nature, and man as something more than just another poor dumb animal in the Universe.

.

Augustine, a far greater intellect, once sais (paraphrased) that philosophy should be measured by its ability to make us happy. That is to say, if one were to live ones life by its precepts, the end result should be a happier more fulfilling life.

Be careful of the irrational vitalists maing

No philosophy course here.

Acknowledging life as more than an accident is stupid.

I will acknowledge that life is what I observe and nothing more, and that I couldnt possibly fathom the means of how this whole debacle came to be.

Having no god does not mean that you will be miserable - I hope you are not implying this.

I give respect where its deserved ala the creeds of satanism.

I am Catholic.. believe in the Church, God, Jesus.. etc.

But IMO... notice I said MY OPINION! nothing is worse than someone that tries to push their faith onto you. You won't change their opinion only make them defensive and push them away further.

Do I believe Christ has risen.. Yes, I Do! Do I need to scream it from every mountain and valley, No... Those who have faith don't need to be reminded.

its ultimately the argument that is flawed. Its like arguing politics.

JerseyArt and I should just agree to disagree but we like arguing too much.

No stupidity is the casual dismissal of possibility without having an answer oneself.

Its somewhat more excusable though in teens who are forgiven for a certain degree of unfounded intellectual arrogance.

Your acknowledgement is not required. What is being discussed is your unjustified arrogance.

If you can't even follow what I wrote above, you have no business speaking authoratatively on the nature of existence.

I didnt say that atheism equates with misery. What I did do was profer an obsewrvation made by Augustine that a philosophies worth should be measured by its utility in helping the practioner to lead a happy existence.

Seperately I implied that Rand's philosophy might not meet this standard

JA.. you know each and every Religous and or Political Thread ends up being a huge Debate...

Everyone has their beliefs and no matter how much you preach nothing will ever change. Its like beating a dead horse. We all are brought up differently, different religions, different beliefs. To take what is instilled in someone over their life time and expect them to see eye to eye with what is instilled in someone else ....... just wont happen.

The bible is a book.. one which can be interpreted a million differnt ways. There is no right and there is no wrong.

Reading through some of these posts the theory of evolution and Neanderthal man becomes much more plausable.

Jersey plays high and mighty quite often. You Sir, are the only one coming off as arrogant.

are you calling me a teenager?

How does Augustine have any authority over Ayn Rand.

If logic is stupidity then I must be guilty of it.

Preach?

Who in this thread have I tried to convert? Please show me the post.

As much to the point, I dont see debate as an evil to be avoided.

Finally to the point there is a historical significance attached to the phrase "Christ is Risen" and I was curious if anyone else knew what it was when posting the thread.

Apparently very few do

Then ask that!

no need to have to post 'Christ is Rise' umpteen times over and over...

I am arrogant sir, it isnt just for show.

Authority no. A far greater intellect yes.

If you arguments possessed logic this would be a far more interesting discussion.

We try to understand that faith is a natural response in humans. Victor Stenger, in his book Physics and Psychics, raises a tough question: "If supernatural beliefs were simply the product of the unsophisticated thinking patterns of early humans, then they should have largely faded away in our scientific age. Yet every survey of people's beliefs continues to indicate a strong majority who believe in God, angels, the devil, astrology, and various other occult and supernatural phenomena." [69]

A possible answer, says Stenger, comes when we consider the advent of the city, which "forced people into greater dependencies on one another." He continues, "Humanity became social. Leaders were now needed to keep some kind of civil order, and the village shaman and temple priest, with their supposed supernatural powers, proved to be effective in keeping everyone in line." [70] Stenger suggests that we "call upon materialism for a reasonable hypothesis: religion evolved by a process analogous to the natural selection that produced us and every other living species. Religious belief may now be deeply programmed in our DNA. This may have happened because, at one time, such beliefs provided a survival advantage for the people who had such coded information in their genes."
