Interesting to see seated GMS.....I do those almost exclusively to standing

it doesn't look like they do the seated GMs for the same benefits as american powerlifters would do GMs for... shi zhiyong is seen doing the seated GMs with 30kg... this guy has clean & jerked 190kg @ 69kg bwt. i think it's just a little addition at the end of a workout for general fitness, stretching (decompressing the spine), or "working the small muscles" as they seem to do that a bit.

they also do supine rows which is interesting.

What would be the point/ benefits (if any) to doing them seated?

I think maybe Zatsiorsky or Dreschler talk about doing ‘em to help isolate the erectors, as maybe it takes the glutes/hams out of it to an extent. That’s from memory, and I’ve never done ‘em so can’t say for sure. If that’s accurate, I can’t think of a reason to do ‘em seated, given you can use greater weight standing and fire multiple muscle groups in conjunction.

It takes hips/hams/glutes out if I do them seated.

Which isnt better than standing...just depends on what I want to hit

I'll agree that the hams are somewhat taken out of the picture doing seated GMs but I can't say the same for my hips and glutes which are usually unreasonably sore the next day.

I think superice's explanation holds true for doing them with heavier weights as well. When you do them standing, you think 1) thrust glutes and hips back and 2) let that initial force guide you through the movement. Now, you've taken away your starting force, so you have to let your back and core do the work. It stretches farther to get the weight all the way down. Changing the plane of travel means your getting more isolation on your back.

As far as I've been able to tell, the major useful reason to do seated GMs, in addition to their own unique strength qualities, is that there's useful carryover for your normal ME or heavy assistance GMs. Now your glutes and hips aren't merely leading a parade because you've taken the time to understand what it is your back should be doing on it's own power besides just going down and up. The whole movement becomes more co-ordinated.

Hope this explanation makes sense- this is one of the more intuitive lifts that I'll do.
For a really good stretch, be sure to bring your nose down to the bench

Seated GM's can be done during extra sessions with light weights or even as a warm-up or as a 'primer' to a later heavy lifting session. They are also good to rehab an injury.

In weightlifting, the squat is not a contested lift, and regardless, the squats done are high bar squats with an upright back and are very quad taxing.....weightlifters do GMs for different reasons than a PL would.

Great pics, biggt. It's enjoyable to get a glimpse of life in the gym instead of the usual competition photo ops. I was especially impressed by the number of kids involved in their weightlifting program. I've often felt that if there was a genuine outreach available to me at an early age it would have saved several tribulations of a wasted youth.

It is a factory man, they have such a HUGE population, they can pool obscene numbers of kids, and the ones who 'don't have it' are sent on their way, and they still have an obscene number of athletically gifted kids to work with.

The Chinese national team has such a great work ethic too.

I thought it would be cool for a lot of people on more of a bodybuilding-related forum to see to because some of those guys have jaw dropping physiques, and all they do is squat and pull.

That gym was amazing. I sure wish my gym was that big.
lol. I went from a gym that had tons of new Hammer Strength equipment and so forth to one that had free power racks and enough room for the basics and a little ingenuity. Now I see a floor like that and I think the same way. It'd be great to have enough space to totally be in your own world for those few hours spent in the gym yet still have access to everything you could possibly need.

Some of those guys had me scratching my head. And there were so many aged 50-70 pulling world-class numbers. Totally impressive.

I can't get over how they can support so much weight overhead, particularly with the weight so far behind 'em. It looks like their shoulders should be ripping out of the sockets.

my favorite is on the first page: 2nd row 3rd col, the one entitled full extension... really gives a very important perspective on correct technique.
