I have seen many different instructions when taking drugs that arent available otc. Medicines such as accutane, anti biotics and so on.

Some say take with milk or food, other on an empty stomach. Could you please tell me the reason for this.

What are the problems when not following the instructions on the leaflet.

Thanks

Most drugs can be taken with or without
regards to meals. Most time it says
take with food due to stomach irriation
concerns.

some drugs cant be taken with food bc the
stomach acid breaks them down; Penicillin
,tetracycline, carafate and some minor
other ones.

some should be taken with food bc it helps
with absorption...Macrobid,macrodantin

.Most of the time it doesnt really matter

if you have any specific drugs email me.

Hi there bro, how are you doing?

I guess one of the most common problems of not following the instructions regarding food is that od "Gastric Emptying Time". When your stomache is full the sphincter that lets food out into the small intestine opens at larger intervals. The "Ph" (e.g. acidity) of the stomache is different from the intestines, so some medicines need to stay there a while, while others need to pass quicker.

Take care

Thanks pittsburgh*, MokhtarSayed, I was wanting to get an answer just for my general knowledge. I am however on accutane and always seem to be taking it on an empty stomach. It says with food or milk, shouldnt be of too much concern? Thanks again
