i can tell they are working hard but how are those exercises beneficial? what are they used for?

Most of them are strongmen, so functional strength is the purpose, I assume.

I imagine these would build loads of core strength.

Yup, core strength and a little explosiveness when cleaning the dumbells up. Notice they try and keep their arms as straight as possible when cleaning them up.

I got it too work too. I'm going to try it with light weight and nail my form first
