Christianity as we see it today is nothing like it was intended when it was founded. There is very little that is god-like about modern day Christianity. It is instead a way of controlling people's behavior. It sickens me to think of the people who have been tortured and killed over the years in the name of Christ. My parents were born again in their late 20s, and they are strong Christians and conservatives so I see this first hand.
Somehow saying the word "fuck" is unchristian... dancing.. not christian because it makes you think of sex.. and sex outside of marriage or even the thought of it, that's not christian! WOW.. wait what about drugs.... some are ok, but others are not... that's weird... music... some is ok, but others are not.. more weirdness.
I understand why Religion is so prevalent in society, its a product of evolution, man needs it to explain the unexplainable. Man needs it to feel purpose in life. I can just imagine how awesome it would be to have faith in something like that.. no matter how shitty your life gets, you can always say "its part of God's plan!" how fucking awesome would that be! Each morning you get up you have a purpose in life, to serve god... you know why the earth and civilization exists (to serve god)... its really genius in some ways.
Too bad some people are just too smart for it.. and its also too bad that people have used it over the years as an excuse for war.

Its no coincidence that the dominant religion of the world is always the religion of the most powerful countries or empires at the time.
Its also no coincidence that EVERY civiliztion has invented some sort of god... being it egyptian gods, roman, buddah, jesus, allah, etc... you've even got modern day religions like mormons, scientology, etc...
odds are you are the religion you are now because your PARENTS told you it was right or SOMEONE else in a position of AUTHORITY.
Not good reasons in my opinion. Has god every really truly spoken to you?

NO offense taken, Listen, the greatest single cause of atheism in the world today are Christians, We accept Jesus with our lips but deny Him by our lifestlye, that is what an unbeliveing world, simply finds unbeliveable. I agree with about 95% of what you said, however you have to ask yourself. Are the people that act this way really Christians? You can claim to be anything you want but that doesn't mean that you are one just because you say it. A Christian by definition is one who is Christ-like and I know that Jesus was not that way.Lestat said:

Sorry lestat. I didnt mean to offend you. I just meant that mormonism is one of the older religons meaning it has the same principles that was tuaght to adam and eve are taught in the church and it was restored in the 1820's by joseph smith. Im not going to say anything more tho. Dont go!

A guy I work with just found out yesterday that he got this girl pregnant, (she’s married as well) This will be his 3rd child by three different women. he already pays like $900 a month on child support with the two kids, so he pretty much screwed his life up at age 25 by going out, getting drunk, and screwing chicks he didn’t know, probably mostly because he was under the influence of drugs. What about STD’s now days? Where did those come from, and why?

I know quite a bit about not only Christianity, but many other religions. And yes it sickens me to see ANY harm done in the name of any god. For whatever reason, most of the organized religions that have taken hold throughout civilization have found some need to cause physical and emotional harm to people, usually those who do not follow, but sometimes its own followers. There are exceptions of course.
I know that Constantine comissioned the Bible. I know how many books were written about Jesus that were destroyed. I know the stories of the man names Jesus, how he preached, and what his followers were like.
I unfortunately know firsthand about modern day religions, Christianity (Protestant), Mormons, Judaism, Scientology, and quite a few others.
I'm not bitter or angry at my parents. They did the best they could and they TRULY believe. Something that makes me sad, but at the same time, admire their convictions.
For me my spiritual awakening started when I was about 8 years old. I was playing "karate" with a neighborhood kid, kicking a tree or something, and the kid goes "I can't play Karate" I said "why?" he says "Because I'm a jehovas witness and my mom said that playing karate is bad"
So I ask my mom about this, she tells me that the jehovas witnesses are a cult like thing and they don't even celebrate birthdays!!
So I go back and tell the kid he is in a cult.. guess what, I wasn't allowed to play with that kid anymore.
So then later on my dad sits me down and asks me if I want to accept the Lord Jesus as my personal savoir... I say "Sure!" so we pray and what not and I guess I was saved then. I kept waiting for something to feel different, for me to actually have some sort of relationship with god... guess what never happened. Basically I wasn't able to convince myself of it. I'm too rational and pragmatic.
I know that many many many highly intelligent people subscribe to religion. Some of the most effective pastors and "prophets" are near genuis level. They have the mental faculty and control to actually force their entire being to believe. I can't knock that.
But yeah, the topic of relgion is a tough one because you have people speaking from faith, others from experience, others from a biased point of view (who isn't biased), and others who rely on physical evidence. There is so much out there that we can't even begin to talk about this without going on for pages and pages.
The most frustrating things for me is what is NOT known. The documentation from the time of Christ, and more importantly the times before Christ, is less then ideal. A lot of information was intentionally destroyed. Everything else has been translated multiple times, each time with a certain level of subjective interpretation.
And to think people live their lives by it.
