cardio more than 3x a week?

Hi all....so i was wondering how horrible it was to run about 2 miles a day maybe 5 or 6 days a week? I know some people will say that it doesn't give enough time for your muscles to restore but I played soccer for 6 years and am quite used to long distance running. Just curious to what everyone thought. Oh and as a side note, i am starting to weight train 3 days a week.
thanks,
rachel

There are several approaches to cardio, depending on your goals, what you enjoy doing and what you've done in the past. Personally I would slap anyone who said "IT IS HORRIBLE TO RUN 2 MILES/DAY 5-6 DAYS PER WEEK!". There are all sorts of ways to get cardio activity into your life. Lots of people find the HIIT 3 days / week with some additional cardio over the course of the week (or not) to get good results. Me personally, I'm prepping for a show & my trainer has me doing 2 sessions of fast-walk paced cardio per day, currently working up at 40 min / session. That's his approach, I'm seeing amazing results on myself and also I've seen repeated amazing results from his other clients. Note, this is for a competition in 7 weeks so my particular cardio load is going to be a little heavier than one would normally do.

To your goals, you might watch to see that your running isn't catabolizing your muscle, though 2 mile/day isn't really "horrible". If you enjoy it, it grounds you and clears your head, then why not? Will that particular approach produce "fat reduction results" quickly? Well if you are doing the same training 6 days/week, your body will (if it hasn't already) adapt to it and the same training won't give you an occassional kick to spur some different (more) bodyfat loss. You might consider doing sprints a few days/week instead of just running 2 miles. That would accommodate both your enjoyment of running as well as getting a change of pace in your cardio training.

It can depend on your goals, current level of fitness, and diet. But mostly goals. :) What you want to accomplish, long and short term, can dictate what is best to do workout-wise.

That said, I love cardio and always tend to do more than the norm. I just like it. :) But I am a freak, lol. :)

I agree with the other ladies....

I personally, HATE cardio, but love walking..... so I walk just about everywhere.....Some HIIT I can enjoy -- but not 1st thing in the morning -- just can't do it....Again, if you like it, can fit it in your schedule, find it works for you, etc....

Cardiovascular exercise is GOOD for your heart & lungs...

I hear that girl... what do you think of windsprints?

Windsprints .... are basically HIIT. Awesome. :)
Yes, I just learned that...

When it stops SNOWING sporadically here  , Ill be going to the track down the street and pumping some out, til failure, with no more than 60 sec rest...

I'm looking forward to getting my ASS worked and hopefully not falling on my face too much... I wake up with bruises, eh, what's a few scrapes... ;)

Well, its more fun if you wake up with bruises and scrapes are from something *other* than cardio.... :velvett:

EXACTLY....which is why I'm pissed LOL

That's not the case for me unless some ghosts are owning me up without my knowledge... bastards... wake me up please

I love cardio.
I love how it makes me sweat and gets my heart pumping but since im only about 105 lbs and want to gain some muscle I try to only do it about once a week.
Like they said it just depends on your fitness goals.

I'm going to pipe in here and say that i agree with the other (much wiser) ladies in here. Although can speak personally that 6 days/wk cardio has shown AMAZING results for me...in conjunction with weight training. I'm working on losing bundles-o-lard tho. But 4 weeks with cardio 1st thing am...6 days a week=results that i'm actually impressed with. (i'm my worst critique) In agreeance that it's all about your personal goals.

rachel- I would skip the cardio on your lifting days or do it AFTER. Im currently running 6 days a wk- alternating bet. HIIT (sprints) and walking @ 12% incline. It really depends on your goal- I want to stay lean (12% BF) & not lose muscle mass from heavy weight-training. Also- when i give myself a cheat day- I hit the cardio for no less than an hr.

hope that helps :)

I was running about 5-7 miles a day prior to getting married. I ended up nearly killing myself! I was also teaching aerobics a few nights a week & wt. training, but I attribute the injuries to running. Granted, it was a freakin furnace (July Texas heat) when I got hurt running-BUT-it will eventually kick your ass in some way. Just don't overdo it.
