cardio confusion!!??

a while ago the unthinkable happened...I was being a saint on my diet plan and i was practically living at the gym- then BAM- i put on weight around my midsection and, belive you me, it wasn't water (i drink 2 gal or over per day). My trainer's verdict was that I has worked myself into starvation mode. Apparently my calorie deficit was too high? (intake 1750 average on carb cycling outtake no less than 3000kcal) I was told to down the cardio, so i did and i dropped back to working out 5x p/week days instead of 6 and try not to do more than 2 hrs of cardio p/week. I guess it's working cos my midsection shrank back, i'm just curious if other people had this happen and what to do if it happens again...I didn't know that the body would start holding back like that. Also (with the goal of muscle maintenance and fat loss)...does AM cardio PM weights work any better than weights followed by cardio in afternoon? how about cardio on an empty stomach (or does that depend on supplementation)?

I have the same problem...finding the balance in cals to lose...I eat to little I don't change....maybe even a little fatter

When you are at the point of cutting specific areas (i.e. the general layers of bodyfat are off and now you are getting significant result in the higher bodyfat areas) then it is all about finding that balance. Esp when you are lower bodyfat - your body doesn't have a lot to hold onto so it will show more dramatically.

No one can answer until you give some stats.

3000 cals is a LOT imo, especially for a female

mighty -- can you give us your background so we have a context to start the discussion --- stats,, etc.

For those that missed this in the welcome thread ...

HEY! So i was refered here by Ghede and I'm loving the site- drive by fitness and nutrition info! I'm totally open to all comments, suggestions, etc. I'm a newbie and have a lot to learn. I started training this summer and I was about 144lbs with 29% bf!!

Current stats: height- 5'8, weight 148-150lbs, bf% 17-18.

My goal is to get down to a 13% bf and to be able to run a 6min mile by August 1st 2006.

I follow a strick carb cycling diet (low (5 days)- 30gCarbs, 80gFats, 190gProteins, med(1 day)- 115gC, 60gF, 200gProtein, and my high day is free to keep my sanity) I love training, currently 5x p/week with 2 free days switching off from heavy and dynamic abs every other day:
monday- back and bi's 45 min heavy cardio
tues-free
wed- chest/tris/bis HIIT
thurs-Legs/back/shoulders heavy cardio or HIIT
Fri- free
Sat- Legs/shoulders recovery cardio (squat max day)
sun-yoga, chest and tris, HIIT

My supplements are 3 sesapure p/day, 12 green tea p/day, 1-2 glucorrel w/ every meal, flax seed oil caps, omega 3 fish oil caps, chromium, a multiple, and calcium.

Any words of wisedom would be welcomed! Thanks :)

Hey! I had this same exact thing happen to me and thats why I am currently trying to cut back on cardio (but just for a couple weeks) up the weights a little bit more and eat a little bit more as well! At first I couldn't believe it and thought the people telling me to drop the cardio down were crazy but after about a week and a half of taking in about half as much cardio i had lost the few lbs i had gained (also in the midsection) So I am sure you'll pull out just fine :)

haha, awesome! there's hope! I guess the idea of cutting back on cardio is just so unorthodox when it comes to what i've been taught (former field hockey player) so it takes awhile for the good advice to sink in. (yea, ghede- i admit you are the all knowing guru :) )

Nahhhhh... i'm just ancient enough to have fucked it up so many different ways I accidently hit on the right way once in a while... (that and a few thousand hours of research and all the wonderful information sharing here and on AF dont hurt one bit...)

Truth is, I have learned more from teaching and training others than i ever learned for my degree or certs... WAYYYYY more... and, mightyT44, you push me to learn stuff all the time.

Thank you.

Yeah..dont know how many calories you should be eating as your stats ure unknown. But...sounds to me like you have excess cortisol production. Cortisol is your stress hormone which is released under stressful settings. Ie: cardio. Your trainer was right by dropping the cardio. Increase weights to 6 days a week and try Bikram Yoga in place of cardio and maybe do cardio once or twice a week and the yoga 4 or 5 days a week. Or...if you dont like yoga or cant attend it just make sure youa re not doing to much cardio.

My man Ghede will take care of you Ma'am. That's my boy! (Too bad your name isn't Blue)
