Cardio and food

Should I eat something before I do cardio or wait three hours after my last meal? I can't do it in the morning so no can do on an empty stomach.
 
I've always eaten a LITTLE. I am more concerned about losing muscle than anything else. I would image that waiting three hours might give you similar fat burning as cardio first thing in the AM. Perhaps a protein drink beforehand to save some muscle, but keep some extra fat burning?
 
If it's before my AM spin class then I wait until afterwards to eat...but that's at 5 AM and only once a week! Otherwise I eat about 2 1/2 hours before training...then cardio afterwards if it's a cardio day. My cardio is usually a kickboxing class or HIIT.
