Car Sales?

madmatt

New member
Is anyone here a salesman? Can you give me the inside scoop on how much money is possible? Hours needed to work? Etc....
I'm thinking about giving it a try! Thanks!

I did some contract work at a Saturn dealership for about a year. Some IT work, but I spent enough time on the floor.

A lot of hours are needed. It's a brutal industry.

Unless you have a way to get into the finance end of it right away, don't bother.

my uncle used to sell cars. he was a shiftless bastard - but people give car salesmen a bad rap.

Can you elaborate alittle? How much can you make on a new car? Please, give total price of the new car as well?

New car rips (as they're called) are 300 bucks.

Used cars are where the money is, and they run from 50-3000.

Hours, minimum are 40-50 on a slow week. 60-85 on a good week.

Average car newbie burns out in 6 weeks.
Vets make 20-60k a year.
Stellar guys make manager and pull down 80 and up.

you are very inaccurate with this info. i know people who make well over 6 figures selling cars and quite a few others who do very well (but not 6 figures). but for the most part, 7 out of every 10 cant put up with the crap to stick it out to get to that point. and the money made by a salesman on a new car depends on the price that the finance mngr closes the deal on. he can make nothing, he can make a grand. it all depends.

Man....you couldn't be more way off base.....

Where are these stats from???

No car dealership will keep you around if you are pulling in 20k....most won't keep you around if you are pulling 40k.....and most sales managers at franchise dealerships are making way into the 6 figure range.....

My guys average 75-85k a year.....(that's in used cars)

I co-own the second largest independent used dealership in the midwest......

The one stat...that's accurate and close in figures is that used car guys will always make more money, than new, with the very rare exception...(the guy who has worked at the Jag, Mercedes, or BMW dealership for 20+ years, and has a loyal base of customers) But my guys average $1000 to $4000 a car.....

It's a tough business........and there are long hours.....

My lot is only open from 10 to 7 m-f and 10-5 on Saturdays.......but good luck finding a lot like that.....that is hiring.....:)

I did this shit 7 years ago and I can tell you that car sales is tough and only one out of ten would still be around after six months.

You fight like hyenas with the other salesmen for "ups"(customers) and you will eventuall burn out in a few months.

If you read the classified section you will see every three months or so the same dealership running an exciting add regarding hiring car salespersons.

If you make it you could make around 50 to 100 K....but ONLY if you make it BIG!

I go fired due to a fight with another salesjerk...I punched the asshole in the face for stealing my customers and getting my commission....FUCK IT! WHO NEED IT ANYWAY!

I lasted 2 months and made around 6 K....It was good money for a newbie as I was one of the TOP 5 at the end of the second month..just behind the big sharks..

this industry is highly dependent on the economy and really can't be compared over varying car pref. times.
