Car Question

New member
Not a mechanical question......but....I put a gas can in the back of my wife's Explorer and obviously it sloshed a bit on the carpet, but not much. Man, the smell of gas is STRONG.

Question is...how to get the odor of gasoline out? I've tried several things like Resolve carpet cleaner, Oxyclean (which helped). I think putting one chemical on another is not working. I need something to neutralize the gas.

Any suggestions???????

Remember, your answers may be the difference between my wife shutting the fuck up or not.......

one chemical on another?
everything is a chemical - it is just a matter of what type.

if it is still wet, then put down cat litter to sop it up, then vacuum up the cat litter.
open the front and back windows and let it get as much air through it as possible - also let it be in warmth - you want it to vaporize and be blown away.

fabreeze (sp?) works great at getting odors out, but you need to get the bulk of the source of the smell out first.

also, you can always burn it out - but I would think the smell of burnt carpet is far worse than the smell of gas.

Yeah, having it shampooed might do it.

It dried pretty quick. Evaporated in the heat.

Someone else suggested Febreeze.....might try that before laying down too much cash.

Good suggestions all........thank you.

you gotta let it dry. It will take about a week. Unless you are gonna replace the carpet.. which would be insane... tell her to ride the free buzz for a week.

There is a product called Ozone as I recall, when my parents house burned they used it(spray) to remove the smoky smell...worked pretty good.

Drive around with all the windows open for a while.

Then place Carpet or Pet odor powder on it for a bit, then vacuum it up. If the smell is still there after this (and all the previous things you've tried), there arent many options besides having it professionally cleaned or replacing the carpet (crazy).

Ever see the episode of Seinfeld where Jerry couldnt get the "evil" B.O. out? LOL!
