Car Guys - Engine Coolant Light came on??

Paulos

New member
I don't know shit about cars aside from how to crash them. A light came on last night at like 1 am, so I took my shit home immediately.

I checked the manual and it said the light was "Low Engine Coolant" warning.

Do I have to drain the old coolant and put new coolant in or can I just add more coolant into it? This is someone elses car that they are donating april 24th so I am only keeping it till the 20th or so...

What do I need to do to make sure it doesn't blow up or some shit?

It's an 89 Mercedes-Benz.

Alright...I just don't want the shit to blow up, the people loaning me the car and my moms friends and I don't think they like me much in the first place.

This is no big deal to sort out. Open the bonnet and find the coolant resevoir. The reservoir should have a mark on the side to show when to stop adding liquid. you can use straight water to do this. Just add it until it is level with the mark.

Hope that helps.

IT PROBABLY STILL HAS COOLANT IN IT SO JUST ADD SOME WATER TILL ITS FULL.

if you gotta ask...

then, take it to a full service station close by and
have them do it...

dont fuck up the cap and radiator...

well then you really can't
afford a new cap or tank either...

try filling the reservoir(the plastic catch tank)
and running the engine til warm and then kill the
engine and see if it will suck the water from the tank
into the radiator...

if i remember correctly, the reservoir on those year mb's
was the only place to add fluid anyway...

be careful with the cap, both removing and reattaching...

those reservoir tanks are expensive...

wasnt trying to be a smart ass bro!!!

If you go to Walmart of something, they have Coolant that's already split 50/50 and you don't have to worry about doing that yourself.

Pour in what you need and keep the rest handy just incase you have a leaks somewhere in you're system.

If you have a funnel this isn't a hard job at all and don't worry many many people have to constantly keep pouring in coolant so it's totally a common problem.

I never add anything but straight coolant to my engine...

I just added a liter of orange juice because I didnt' want to go to the store and get water, the light went off. Thanks guys.

Just drive it until the oil light and then the engine light go on. After a while, the warning lights will burn out so that when you return the car it will all look hunky-dory.

Don't put tap water in it. Use Distilled water . Also be sure you get the GREEN kind of antifreeze. The Dexacool (orange) is made for newer cars. Most peple think you can mix them. WRONG.

Don't the manufacturers recommend that you dilute it 50/50?

That's very true, unless your owners manual says to use straight coolant, you should always do 50/50.

There are some cars that take it straight, none come to mind however.
