this new fad of filling tires with nitrogen has been taking off lately.

whats the deal

advantages/disadvantages

I think they stay inflated longer and the pressure variation between high temps and low temps is smaller. I'm just a driveway mechanic/google expert though.

When your tires are filled with air... your psi might change according to the temperature outside. If its too hot... it will overinflate... if too cold... too little. This causes tire wear. With nitrogen the pressure stays the same regardless of the temp.. reducing tire wear. It's a plus in my books... but I still haven't seen a nitrogen filling station in my area.

True, but this is only for passeneger car tires.......but it wont work in the winter, as nitrogen is colder than air, combined with the chill outside it can make the tire brittle, and one good pothole will actually break it like its glass..........

The ideal gas law is: PV = nRT

The pressure, volume, and R are the same (theoretically). The temperature varies which is the variable we're trying to control.

That suggests that "n", the number of moles present, is less for nitrogen than it is for atmospheric air.

Air is a blend of O2 (mw = 32), CO2 (mw = 44) and N2 (mw = 28)

Gaseous nitrogen is pure N2 (mw = 28)

So yeah... I guess it takes fewer moles of nitrogen to fill up a tire than the equivalent number of moles of oxygen.

As you said, it's the flavor of the month. Expensive for so little benefits since you can monitor your pressure by yourself. And the more moisture it has, the worse it is compared to compressed air.

I had a feeling it was just one of those fads,I was only looking into it because Im having mad tire problems, and am having to run it 8lbs under the max so my fucking car doesnt feel like its slamming at every bump.

after I chew through theses Im going to 50 series as opposed to these 45's

Keep your car alligned and rotate your tires every 3k miles then.

what is your current tire profile ? 215/45/18 ? I have 40/19 on my ride and it aint that bad. Keep in mind that Montreal is like Beyrouth with all these potholes.

alignment was just done about 2k ago, as for rotating,I can only go from left front to rear, and right front to rear, they are directional tires
