car alarms, your opinion

Do you think car alarms are really worth the money? I just bought one off ebay for $165 with everything, but it's gonna cost more than that to install the fuckin thing. Do you know anyone/anywhere that installs them for the least $$? How hard is it to do it yourself?

if a thief wants your shit, then a thief got your shit. of course its better to have one so your friends and family wont call you stupid for not having one

Yeah, I would think an average thief would know his/her way around an alarm if they're actually planning to jack some shit. I have a stock alarm on my jeep but who knows if a new python will outwit a knowledgable thief. Anything can happen I guess.

Someone stole my car alarm, I wouldn't recomend wasting your money.

Installed on your car? What model was it? Man, that's ironic shit.

It was a Viper Alarm, I honestly can't remember the model but it was one of the more expensive ones. If you want your car to stay put get a club, if you want to keep your system then I don't know what to tell you...

I've had cars stolen from me 3 times and broken into many many times. My subs and amps are bolted in my trunk, if theives want them they're going to have to spend 15-20 minutes getting them out. This sounds dumb but I've stopped locking my doors now, beats the hell out of picking up broken glass and then paying for a new window..

I love riding real slow next to cars and setting off the car alarms.

I just find a store with the most tricked out imports and ride around slow, often stopping to rev the engine to set off more alarms.

I've found that Fry's has quite a few tricked imports, and so do most mall parking lots.

the effectivness of any alarm depends on how well it is installed. If the 'brain' of the unit is right under the dash were you can reah up and snip wires off it then you can shut the alarm up AND make it easier to hot wire the car, because if there is a remote start on the alarm then you already have the ignition wire all in one convienent place.

BUT now if you have the brain and auto start relays in a spot tucked WAY in the back of the dash, say behind the area where the radio is, or in a jeep vehicle right under the steering colum there is a metal reinforcing plate behind the plastic trim so you can install an alarm in that spot securely you will be all set.

as far as installing, if you are good with cars, and have a multimeter (if you dont kno what a multimeter is then dont try to install yourself :D ) then its an easy 2 hours for your first time installing. most of this time is spent taking the dash apart.

get the car alarm not to stop theives, but to get a discount on your insurance.

get the new car lock, a solid steel locking mechanism that locks your brakes like "the club", but better than that because you cant hacksaw through it, or "freeze" it, or anything else. get at your local auto part store, $60.

get www.filearmor.net for your computer.

haha this is funny shit. A friend of mine was outside some place one day watching a guy put the club on his car and then walked around the car to make sure every door, trunk lide etc was locked. When she came back not even 10 minutes later the car was gone and in its parking space was the club neatly placed. I gues the theif had a sence of humor and wanted to mock the guy for spending 15 minutes to make sure his car was locked.

The best thing to do is get an alarm with starter kill and as a back up install a kill switch someplace youself. They now have systems that will not work outside the car with certain keys & codes etc...they work pretty good. But the bottem line is if someone wants your shit bad enuf they will take it..Even if they have to drag the car out of there on a flatbed.

Also, dont advertise your shit. If you go into a bad area or places with lots of people dont go around blasting your shit. Your asking for trouble right there.

My alarm has a remote start (good for winter and summer for sure).

The alarm comes in handy when I come out of Wal Mart and I can't remember where I parked it...I just set the alarm off and I can then find it easily.
