Cancer Genes

Just found out Saturday that my family on my mothers side is one of 14 in the world known to carry a specific gene that mutates into a form of cancer. In men it causes colon or prostate cancer...in women it causes either breast or ovarain cancer. My mom had ovarian cancer which added her to the list of every female on her dad's blood line that had either breast or ovarian cancer. When they found out this, they asked her and my grandpa to be part of this research study...where they found this gene in both of them. I now have a 50/50 chance of carrying this gene and if I do then my daughter also has that same chance. Well......because my mom was part of this study I have the option of having the same genetic test done (which I understand to be very expensive) free of charge and it also allows me to have lifetime genetic counseling from this lab in NJ.

My question....does anyone have any experience with this testing?

And those who haven't.....would you have the test done?

no!!!

dont you watch the x-files???

its a trick...

seriously, though, i would get
it done but then what are you
gonna do???

other than vitamins and frequent
testing its not like anticancer preventative
comes in a bottle...

and...i wonder if the insurance pukes
would try to use some pre-existing clause
on you then???

I would have the test done in a heart beat. Forewarned is forearmed and early detection is the key to nipping prostate and colon cancers in the bud.

Cancer did not run in our family! No one in my mom or dad's family ever died from a cancer....Until my dad was diag. w/ bladder cancer last year.

I'm confused as to why they would give you a lifetime of genetic testing. Would the first test NOT show if you had the gene or not?Or does this mean that all your kids can be tested down the line?

I'd get the test if I were you. You'd at least know .

In your case...I'd be more worried about the colon cancer than the prostrate cancer.

You can start now , via your diet, keeping the colon cancer at bay perhaps.

Get it done. For the longest time I thought I might be HIV positive because I had unprotected sex back in my high school college days and I refused to take the test. Finally after many many years opf thinking I had HIV every time I sneezed I finally got the test done end of last year and it came out negative. It was like this huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders.

Vix,

Yes...if I have the gene then my children are tested for free. The lifetime thing also includes counseling....if I, wife, or children ever need to talk to a counselor it will be there for us.

Wodin,

Yep....but the main reason I am considering it is for my daughter. Even if I have the gene there is a 50% chance for it to mutate into cancer...if my daughter has it there is an 85% chance for cancer for her (not childhood cancer). I guess there are many things my daughter will be able to do to help prevent it...and regular testing will be her best bet, past the age of 21.

I keep telling my wife not to worry...in 20 years allot can happen to help combat the cancer.

BB,

Very true, gene therapy advances are being made all the time.

I, like you, would worry more about my lil girl as well!

We can hope that most cancer's will be GONE before she has to worry, right?
