HMSC Chicoutimi is one of four second-hand submarines bought from Britain for C$750 million in 1998 and since plagued by serious mechanical mishaps and a number of leaks.

LOL. I wonder if they bought a bridge too?

I must say, as often as I hear guys make fun of Canadian armed forces, you guys at least keep trying to gear up.

these subs

-one or two of them dropped to the ocean floor on their first few voyages
-the sub in question could never fire its torpedos when launched and had tohave the bays sealed due to the fact that when it did water would

You have got to be kidding.

Another stellar use of our tax dollars by the Canadian government :)

Fucking tools.

Funny. Canada has awesome top-notch defense contractors and companies and technological innovators..

problem?

They work for the US Army. Canada couldn't afford their products, nor wants them.

I have nothing positive to say. The subs are a national joke.

Our military is in a sad state. The government is partly to blame, but there are a lot of internal problems as well.

I really hope things change, but I'm not optimistic.

LOL bought them second hand from the UK....

Also LOL that they became disabled off the coast of ireland - high risk duty they have there - patrolling the waters of the coast of ireland....

....maybe they were looking for COBRA agents who planned to steal the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!

why would Canada need an army. The us is their army, it's like having the toughest older brother on the block. Ain't nobody going to fuck with Canada.

That's 100% true.

My brother is a sniper in the Canadian military, and while he does go through extensive training, he says that it's so much of a joke, it's unreal. Whenever he has new training he goes overseas or to the US to train, as Canada just doesn't have the facilities to train our troops properly.

Don't get me wrong, I have all the resepct in the world for my brother, but I wouldn't consider him a combat solider. He's been in it for about 10 years now and all he ever does is go away to countries with civil problems (he's been in Afghanistan, Haiti, Bosnia and Egypt) and helps out in Peace Keeping missions. He was never asked to go to Iraq, nor would they send him there because it was a real war, with real dangers.

The Canadian Military's main focus is keeping the world happy and civil. Kind of like the nice guy who tries to break up the fight he see's on the street. It's mostly for their political image, because everyone in the world knows that if you attack Canada, the US would be right there to back us up.

I think that I live in an awesome country, but sometimes I get embarassed when I realize just how spineless we really are.

Canadian snipers were used with great effectivness in Afghanistan, and routienly win competitions against snipers from other countries, even against Ranger and SAS snipers. Sucks that your bro hasn't been to any real hot spots, but that's the Canadian government for ya...

We are a pretty spineless country. Our military could be top notch..there's no lack of effort/desire on the troops' part. I think the real problem is that we havn't really had any enemies since WW2, and it's made us soft.

They dotn need subs.

they dont even need an Army.

They have us. If anyone even thought of attacking Canada we would be all over em like Richard Simmons on a male stripper.

Do think we would let anyone take away our neverending reminder of how bad extreme liberalism can completely fuck up a country..?

hhmm, I don't see it that way. I'm pissed off they wasted my tax dollars on these things because I don't want them and we don't need them. Canada believes in peacekeeping rather than policing and I fully support that policy. People love to bring up the US being our 'protector'. Bullshit. When have we ever as a nation asked for or needed the US to 'protect' us? Never. Some countries may think twice about fucking with us due to our Southern neighbours but I think most don't fuck with us because there is no reason to.

The best part is that the sub needed help because a wave damaged the bow. A freakin wave.

LOL :D

Sonarman: "Sir, we have an incoming wave on the sonar."

Captain: "ETA to impact?"

Sonarman: "10 SECONDS SIR!!!!."

Captain: "ALL HANDS BRACE FOR IMPACT! SOUND COLLISION ALERT!"

Sonarman: "Captain, there's another wave right behind it!."

Captain: "Release the logbouy and distress beacon, send out the SOS signal! Hurry crewman, we won't last much longer!!!"

well they fixed the issue with the torpedos but when it launched it couldnt fire them without fears of sinking the ship

i cant find the article i read on the subs, but i was really laughing out loud reading it. I can actually imaine the admiralty showing these canuck soldiers round the boats having covered up all the holes with hardboard and duct tape and rolling back the mile-o-meter

most of our subs have had engine problems and our entrie fleet of subs have been taken offline at one point for nuclear engine health and saftey. granted they were perfectly seaworthy and fightable in but it was a design flaw

and this subs record speaks for itself. before launch it was actually CANNABALISED to get parts for the other 3 subs. lol, the navy must have been wetting themselves when they realised they could sell off the damn things

still if they were just to patrol and are fixable means its not such a bad investment, if they budgeted it right it all should pay off

One of those sailors just died... I hope the Liberals feel good about providing crap to our military.

BTW, we need a military to protect sovereignty. A country like Canada (large amount of coastline) needs a Navy to patrol our coasts. Without that we're gong to find ourselves in territory disputes like the North Pole & Hans Island. A country which can't protect it's own borders is not a sovereign nation.

If we had put patrol ships off of the East coast during the 70's & 80's (like Iceland did) we might still have cod stocks in a healthy condition.

How does Canada not having an army make us spineless?? I call that SMART, not spineless.

Because if we were ever attacked we can't just assume the US will be there.....I mean, even Uzbakistan has an army. We can't always rely on our neighbours to the south.....becuase nothing is written in stone. The US and Canada were at war once before, and if I recall correctly (from grade 8 social studies) that the US attacked and Canada fended them off. (mind you this was like 200 years ago, and the only guns we had, we stole from indians)

anyway...who knows what could happen, and not having a military that is strong and confident is just opening a door of danger.

Think it through. If someone attacked and the US didn't support the attack, then the US would defend us. For example, let's say that some Iraqi boyscouts wanted to take over Canada and won. Now the US would have to fear a possible strike against them. So, they would step in.

If the US wanted the attack to go through, then they would help the attackers and we'd lose anyways.

Yeah you're right....Just like no-one will ever take over Mexico. I guess the US is content with us as their "neighbours"

I never thought of it like that.....because even if the US didn't support the attack on us, they would still make sure it didn't happen, because then they'd have the attackers as neighbours.

good call....I never saw it from that perspective....

regardless though.....I'm sure if it came down to it, our army as weak as it is, could probably put up a good fight against a country like Sweeden....(tinge of sarcasm) ;)

Sorry kids, it's not about being attacked.... it's about sovereingty & clout at the international table. A country cannot affect change without the military clout to back it up. *mind you, military clout can be abused... goes with the territory & why free nations have to stop electing idiots to run our countrIES. Problem is, we only have idiots being put before us on all ends of the political spectrum.*

Also, it looks like a refresher course on the War of 1812 is in order... History Channel Canada ran a good series on it recently, some of you might want to keep a look out for a repeat.

It's reactions like this that make it easy for our government to get away with wasting our money on crap that doesn't work (i.e. gun registry). Imagine how much bigger our surplus could be if people took this BS seriously.

If I recall, the gun registry wasn't put to a public vote. So, we have to put our "faith" in our elected officials.

What I've always wanted in politics is just some explaination as to why things are done the way they are done.

Its sort of like work. Decisions come down from the top and the "lower" levels usually think they are stupid. However, if the "lower" levels look at the decision from a higher position, they would realize why the decision was made. They may not agree, but would understand why.

Ummmm... no. Elected "officials" are only civil servants, the PM being the most senior, can only get away with what the idiot electorate allow. The government is not god.

FYI, handgun crimes have exploded by 40% since the registry went into place. 2 Billlion well spent... riiiiiiiiiight.

True, but did they ask you whether or not they should have the gun registry? If not, then I assume that your elected official voted for you. That what I meant by our faith in the elected officials. BTW, how did you contact them to let your feelings known?

Link please. Or, is that your opinion?

I'll second the call on a link for that stat. Every study I've seen has violent crime steadily decreasing in this country for over a decade.

Don't have a link to the story. It's info I got from a Global News special (about a month ago)... it also stated that the sale of handguns is skyrocketing. I'll look around the Global TV site.

We had a chance to get rid of the Liberals & remind them who's boss, but Canadians let them off AGAIN. My point is... we have to make these people accountable. We were told that registry would cost $4-6 million, that's a far cry from $2 billion.

As for how to contact your MP:

Because we don't need top notch army nor am I ready to see my taxes spent on some useless battle tanks, subs or whatever else. The Canadian army is actually a joke. Money is spent on the wrongs items. They had the opportunity to build 2 pocket nuclear subs (similar to the French version) but they bought some old crap for almost the same price. But it's all politics. Why did we use to have Iltis ? because they were built under license by Bombardier which is own by a close friend of former idiot premier "Jean Chrétien"...

ALl we need is a small but effective army...

I will be the lone candle off in a distance to provide some light...

So what if canada doesn't have the biggest military? Look at the money they are saving by not being a force that is asked to step in other peoples shit. If they don't have much to offer, no-one will ever ask much of them. Now think how much the us is spending daily by being in almost every country.

Look at the money being saved or look at the probable money made? Adjusting your economy for military growth might as well transform a country and its fortunes. US made tons of money during the WW1 and WW2 for this reason. They still feel the need for war because of that modified economy needs to be fed. But its brilliant minds and hard word thats needed to walk this fine line so that a country doesn't end up like N.Korea.
