Can you use 23g 1.0 needles for Butt Shots

Gorilla, you are mistaken. I am a doctor, but I learned how to do my injections in school many moons ago. We are taught safety first, not stupidity. If you insert up to the hub, you risk breakage and separation. I have always used a 23g, 1 1/2" to keep the depth without inserting the needle up to the hub. You can do whatever you want..I just do what has worked for me for over 14 years.

Doctor or not (I don't believe you are), you are an idiot and have no clue what you are talking about.
Needles don't break, they bend. Period.
Not sticking the needle all the way in and aspirating is dangerous. Period.

are you serious? i have a tough time getting the gear through a 23g needle. anything smaller it just wont work

Draw with a bigger dart, and then switch to the 23... it should come out alot easier than it will go in through a 23.

Gorilla, have you ever given a gluteal injection to an uncooperative kid? A buddy of mine tried several years ago and the needle did break off the hub. Fortunately, he was able to retrieve it without surgery. I know of one doc that had to close his office early to accompany a patient to the hospital because of a separation. He couldn't retrieve it. After several x-rays and blunt dissection, and three hours, the surgeons finally retrieved the needle. I have given thousands of injections to babies, kids, and adults..I have witnessed hundreds of injections..stuff happens. Go to medical or dental school and then go into private practice..you will see it all.

I can't say I've given an injection to anyone who was uncooperative. I can say that I have tried many times to break needles when people have tried to tell me that they can break.

Try it. Try it over and over again with all sorts of pins, big and small. They will not break.

To get that needle to break, your buddy must have been holding that needle with both hands and the kid's ass had to be made of iron.

I don't want to get involved on this but, I really can't imagine the metal part breaking. On the other hand I can see where the plastic part would break away from the metal.

The plastic part will not separate from the metal. Take a pair of pliers and try it. You can probably do it but how much force did it take? You muscles don't have that sort of clamping power.

This thread got me curious. I just got a 25g x1" and tried to bend it (bare hands, no tools). Bent easy enough, but did not break. When I straightened it, broke right off at the hub as soon as I started. Now I don't think a needle will bend so easily/likely while injecting yourself unless you move suddenly or bend to the extent I just did. But if you were to try to straighten it instead of just pulling it out, it will break. In the respect of a child squirming around (I have 2 and havd had to restrain them), the needle could break off easily as he jerks one way and then another. Also, the size needles used for those type of injections are generally smaller than what we use them for. The moral is that we should be safe not sorry later. The unexpected happens and usually at the worst possible time. This of course does not mean I am going to go and get rid of all my 1" and 5/8" needles. I'll use them up and keep this thread in mind when I order new ones. When I do I'll use Zyg's idea and cut a cap so I don't bounce around and end up in a vein.
