I played for 2 or 3 years when I was very young... I wish I hadn't stopped... so much more useful and enjoyable now than all that time I spent playing drums. is anyone here really great?

Funny, we had a piano in our house all the while I was growing up but I never seriously considered playing. Too immature/fucked up as a kid I guess. In college though I took it up as a hobby after playing guitar for a while, to try something new. I know how to read music so I picked it up pretty quickly- G'nR, Billy Joel, Coldplay, etc. One thing I had to have explained to me was that the bass notation on sheetmusic is two notes higher than treble. I was sitting there thinking all the music was wrong and even wrote to the company, :o. I started to get into classical after a little over a year of half ass practicing but graduated and left town. There's not one bloody piano where I'm at now where I can practice. Kinda pisses me off. I might find one at the University a half hour out of town but I haven't gotten around to finding out, lol.

The only real advantage of starting young with any instrument is time, and that what you learn is later realized as second nature. Starting older though you have more maturity on your side, and are able to think more cognitively about what you're doing, and then you roll with it. To anyone serious about learning, I'd recommend getting an instructor to teach some basics if you're completely new, so as to avoid learning the wrong way, which is easy to do. There usually tends to be an easier way than what you think is right. I've always been drawn to piano though; it's a very mentally stimulating instrument. It's also been know to stimulate the wiminz nether-regions. ;)

Have fun.

Yes. My Grandparents played, My Parents play, Dad is a classical pianist, my Daughter plays and I play <badly>. It's calming to run your fingers over those ivory keys, I always wanted to learn the flute tho

You play drums?

I'm multi instrumentalists. If you can play few different instruments you can pretty much play all with small amount of practice.

Do you own a piano? I bought a Yamaha P250 last year so that I can practice with headphones ;)

Is that a Yamaha KEYBOARD-not just the piano? Where you can mix in the drums, percussions, sax and so on? Do you do your own songs for fitness competitions? I got a Yamaha PSR-273-but now I wished I would had got the full sized keyboard.

Someone else asked about the prices for lessons-the going rate is 40.00-60.00 an hour for private lessons/about 25 for half an hour. If it is cheaper then that, then the instructor probably does not have that much experience.
