Whoever made this nonsense up is a moron. Everybody's metabolism is different so the only way you can find out how many calories it takes to cut and maintain weight is play around with a diet and keep track of it with a journal and go from there. I've been playing around with my diet for about 5 months and still don't have the exact numbers I need to maintain. I know what it takes for me to cut and bulk, but haven't got the maintenance part down yet.

The Correct Calorie Consumption...

Take your body weight and X by:
8 to 10 to loose bodyfat
12 to gain muscle and loose bodyfat
15 if you want go gain muscle.

You should be eating the correct amounts of carbs and protien eg

if your body weight is 170lbs and you want to loose body fat right, then;

170 X 10 = 1700

Ok now to workout out how much % of those caloreis you want protein etc...

1700 x .40 = 680 caloreis from protein
1700 X .40 = 680 calories from carbohydrates
1700 X .20 = 340 calores from fat

This does work by the way I tried it for about a week and saw results

Good Luck

thx BatZ :)

also i take the cals and divide it by the number of meals i have a day?

or 680 cals divided by 4cals = 170 protein? 170carbs and 80fat over 6meals?

I'm sorry, but metabolism is what will cause body fat loss/gain/maintenance, not any kind of mathematical expression. Plus way too many factors come into play when it comes to somebody's metabolism to use any kind of multiplication to find out how many calories somebody needs to meet their goals.

Doofaloofasponge - maintenance/cutting cals will be different for everyone, but those numbers are a good starting point, unless you'd like to take a month out of your life to determine exactly what your maintenance cals are.

Start with bw x 12 for a couple weeks and see what happens. If you're not losing anything, lower it. It's like anything else, it will take some time to figure out what works for you. Formulas can be used as general starting points. No one ever suggested those numbers are set in stone.
