I only need to go 500cals over maintenance to make steady gains. Unfortunately my maintenance level can be quite high. Im sure you could get by with 500 over. You could do 1000 if you want, probably just increases your chances for fat gain.
I'm trying to look for the doc now, but about 7 months ago I was at the doc and they hooked me up to some machine that i had to breathe into for about 15 minutes.
It calculated all of it from there and i remember it was around 2500 maintenance
If you are trying to get as big as possible just eat as much as you can, of whatever you can. If you are looking for "quality gains" and are scared of a little fat then keep counting your cals.
