What's up fellas.

I got a Dell dimension 4100 that I just installed Microsoft .net on and it broke internet assplorer. Windows 2000. When I installed the .net framework it did all kinds of updates like service packs, etc. I did not install IIS because of some policy where you can't install IIS on individual machines.

I get the error when I go to the msdn site where there is a table of contents on the left frame, Error: A Runtime Error has occurred. Do you wish to Debug? Line: 29 Automation server can't create object. I hit no and the same thing comes up but for line 921. I hit no, and the box goes away but the TOC will not display. This error repeates itself whenever I switch to a new topic.

I also will get the odd error on Elite fitness but it doesn't prevent anything important from displaying.

I tried reinstalling IE but to no avail. It is 6.0 and I am behind a firewall so there is this automated scrip that you run off a file server.

So basically installing .net has broken my ability to learn how to use .net. This is so Microsoft.

HELP!

you are getting javascript errors.
it *might* be activex on the msdn site.
as for IIS on individual computers, that must be a new thing.

if you installed .net (is it out yet? I haven't been paying enough attention I guess), then it likely updated to the newest dlls of all the various languages, including the runtime stuff.

I would say uninstall .net, and you already did do the IE...

"don't know" is the best I can offer on that one since I've never used .net.

windows 2000 or 2000 server??(i thought iis only came with 2000 server, but i may be wrong)

did you install the SDK or the base .net framework???

did you install visual studio .net?

do you have visual studio 6 installed also?

the .net framework shouldn't have any effect on the running of ie6... do you have a pop up window stopper installed(these generate script error sometimes)

could your corporate security policy be preventing you from running activex components in ie?

Thanks for the quick replies.

Puc: Windows 2000 regular.

I installed the SDK, (There's an entry in my Start Menu->Programs list called that)

I also installed Visual Studio .net.

I only installed what came on the CDs and I didn't have any other Visual Studios on here before.

I do not believe I have a pop-up stopper because I still get the popups at Elite. I sure didn't install one.

Yes as a matter of fact when I go to my yahoo I get a message that says "Your current security settings prohibit runnin ActiveX controls on this page yadda yadda yadda" But this has always been true and these errors are new.

I had never been to msdn that I remember but like I said I am getting similar errors on Elite now. Installing .net is the only major change I have made so I am assuming that is it.

geeze sorry it took so long to get back to you...

Here is my guess.

You probably were not using IE 6 Before, and when you installed the SDK it requested you upgrade to IE6. You do have a corporate security policy on your firewall which is prohibiting you from running activex controls (these are executable objects which imbed themselves within a web request),

Whether in the inital install or after the upgrade, your default browser setting were changed.

go up to tool/internet options on your menu bar

then go to the advanced tab. under advanced, uncheck the box that says 'Display a notification about every script error'

That will keep the goofy message boxes from getting in your way.

elite has a shitpot of script errors all over it that maybe you were not seeing before because of your browser settings.

play around a little and see if that is any better.

Next, what do you mean by TOC?

Also, use the quickstarts to learn this stuff, they are excellent. go to your sdk option on your start menu... a link to them is under there.... pm if you need anyting. I will be knee deep in that shit all day tomarrow anyway.

OH AND BY THE WAY. IF YOU INSTALL IIS LATER, YOU NEED TO RECONFIGURE THE .NET FRAMEWORK. IF IIS IS NOT ON WHEN YOU FIRST INSTALL IT, IT WILL NOT RUN ASP.NET PAGES. I ONLY KNOW THIS BECAUSE I SPENT TWO DAYS OF MY LIFE FIGURING IT OUT. I KEPT CUSSING AND BITCHING AND LOOKING THROUGH DOCUMENTATION... FUCKERS!!!!

also... if you have another browser (netscape?) installed on your computer, try and access the sites using it. What happens there?

That will help narrow the troubleshooting search

I have the same problem, everything was fine untill I installed Office XP Pro. I wish I could get rid of those messages, they drive me nuts!

Puc--

Thanks for the advice.

In the advanced tab of Internet Options, the "Display notification for script errors" is not checked to begin with. Neither is "Enable script debugging."

TOC means Table of Contents.

When I use Netscape the TOC displays correctly but the right frame with the text in it does not.

And don't worry, there is a serious policy against installing IIS on any computers other than designated servers so IIS will never be installed on this machine.

Any further suggestions?
