I had the shoes back in high school and it helped me touch the rim, I was about 5' 6" at the time. They made my calves stronger, but didn't really notice any size difference (though I wasn't really caring about getting bigger calves, but rather jumping higher).
From what I remember, it did not improve my standing vertical jump. Only when I jumped off of one foot while I was running, like a lay-up, did I get any significant gains.
Right now, I just do calf raises (seated, standing, and donkey) and plyometrics once or twice a week. I don't jump as high as I used to (several ankle injuries have hindered that).
