Cacophonists have been known to dress as Santa Claus and drink all weekend (SantaCon), or dress in animal suits and go bowling. Usually the events and participation criteria are such that it is easy to identify others who are participating, but perhaps difficult to identify them later in ordinary circumstances.

Other significant events created by the Society are: the Atomic Cafe, the Zone Trip, the Chinese New Year’s Treasure Hunt, the picnic on the Golden Gate Bridge, Pet Cemetery Bingo, The Crucifixion of the Easter Bunny, the Brides of March, Urban Iditarod, and the Sewer Tour.

The 6th Annual Portland Urban Iditarod will be run Saturday, March 3rd, 2007. Show up at 11am. We mush at 11:30am sharp. You can register by sending e-mail with your team name to [email protected].

The event is held on the same date the “real” race each year - the first Saturday of March. In the Alaskan Iditarod, more than sixty dog sled teams race across the frozen tundra from Anchorage to Nome. In our urban version, teams of ‘dogs’ lead by a musher will pull their sleds (shopping carts) through some of Portland’s most scenic areas. These teams of barking humans must negotiate through the unrelenting and unforgiving dangers of Portland’s urban frontier.

As an incentive to run, dogs and mushers alike will have several ‘rest stops’ to replenish lost fluids and discuss tales of mayhem. The course is over four miles, so dogs and mushers alike need to be ready and able to run their tails off.

The 6th Annual Urban Iditarod will start at the Fire Station on S.E. Madison right next to the Willamette River and follow a brand new course for 2007! The course map will be posted on the website as well as passed out at the race start once the ‘rest stops’ are confirmed.
