Cable modems?

Never Enough

New member
What's up guys? Don't post over here much, but I know this won't go over well on the anabolic board. So do any of you use a cable modem? What can you tell me about them? Do you like, dislike, is there anything I should know about them b4 purchasing one tomorrow? Also do you need some sort of firewall when using a cable modem as compared to dial up? Thanks for any info you can give me!

get the cabel modem. You havea free phone line all the time. Its a much faster connection. well worth the purchase.

and yes you will need some sort of firewall. You don't want virus' and also you should be using norton antivisrus either way.

Flex123, what do you mean by that?
Yeah, my comp already has a virus checker. Can't go without one now-a-days. Is there a firewall you recommend. I've heard some of the firewall programs can be areal pain in the ass. Any advice that way?

I use the zone alarm firewall, it works fine and it's not agrivating.

As far as cable modems, I haven't had any trouble with mine. I would hate to go back to dial-up.

Yea,I have been using the free version for over a year.No complaints here.

Oh,I was finally able to hit ya back on the green:D

zone alarm is shit software... if you REALLY think you need a firewall, buy a router w/one built-in... think about it, do you really think someone's going to take the time to hack into someone's shitty home computer (mine included) when there is absolutely NOTHING to gain from that...

I got negative karma for saying cable modems are great? Message is Thanks and no name. I love this stuff, lol:rolleyes:

I said you have a free phone line all the time, because Its not tied up from your dial up modem all the time. Cable modem doesnt use the phone line. JESUS this is what i got bad Karma for?????

Cable modems SUCK..I have one....the reason they suck is...the more people in your town who subscribe to a cable modem...the slower your speed is...when I 1st got my cable modem a few years ago it was pretty fast...now its slow as shit....

Get DSL...it will always be fast and you use the phone line for it, not a coaxel cable wire and you can still use the phone even while connected to the internet.

Also I have router with a built in firewall and I have zone alarm as well.

My home computer has been hacked many times. I get attacks daily, thanks to my firewall I can block most of those attacks now. I use Norton Personal Firewall 2002

NY Muscle is right in that if you get a cable modem and the company that runs the service doesn't upgrade the local routers, then they will effectively get clogged as too many users in the area are on for them to handle... the result is your network connection can get really slow.
a good company won't do that, depends on where you are.

DSL is slower at greater distances from the repeater, and it slows down in hot weather (it runs over copper cables, so you are dealing with thermoelectric principles). so if you live in the middle of nowhere, or in a very hot area, DSL isn't gonna be feasible. The colder it is, and the closer you are, the faster it will be by default (not the case with cable).

also, DSL is usually fast down, and slow up (meaning if someone wants to connect to your machine, it will be slow) - whereas cable is traditionally equal speed either way (changing some now as AT&T and others are creating variable speed plans to generate more money).

check out www.dslreports.com - they cover all home networking, both DSL and cable - they have an extensive list of areas and a good discussion board for all kinds of things.

I have cable since 4 years, on two different ISP¨(due to location)

and NEVER NEVER again I will go to a 56k

NEVER!!!!!!!
