Buying Ground Beef

Does anyone know how much fat drains off when you cook ground beef. For example, does draining a 73/27 (beef/fat) make it like a 90/10? Thanks.

i highly doubt it...

i use a Forman grill for my 93/7, so i hope i'm not losing whatever fat was in there...

so if you start off with lean ground beef, say 93/7, you shouldn't drain it? By the way, this is all in the context of losing weight. I ask cause there is still a decent amount of fat in it.

seriously. the protein content in 93/7 is better also.

consider buying the lean ground turkey (READ the label, not all is lean) and mixing it in with the ground cow as well. I use the foreman to help drain also, but with the 93/7, there isn't much in the little blubber drain.

Yep. Ground turkey. Foreman kicks ass.

I love the foreman, but the smell from cooking on it is almost intolerable for girls i bring back, i dont notice it but i guess its cause i smelled it everyday. The nonstick has worn off good ol' george, so maybe i'll go looking for a good deal on a foreman in the next week.
I normally buy whats on sale and dont normally buy anything less then 80/20. If nothing is on sale i just buy the 93/7 cause its always like $3/lb. I try to make it economical since i try to eat a lb a day.

Haha, i hear ya man, if you dont clean georgio right away, those things get filthy and stink ass!!! Chicks dig that dont they?.....

lol, the smell is embarrassing and my roommates hated me when i was using it. I'm gonna go back to using it soon, i've just been having so much fun cooking the meat in a pan. i can mix ground beef with anything.

Okay, this might sound stupid; but when you say 93/7...does it actualyl say 93% on the label? Most of the meat that I buy says 90%. I'd go for the 95%, but that's a little more then I'm willing to pay for given how much I eat (or at least should be eating).

Yeah, it says 93/7, theres some 96/4, 90/10, 85/15, etc. They are normally different cuts. The 90/10 is normally groun sirloin, 85/15 is ground round.

fattiest beef ill buy is 88/12. and even then, when you brown it in a skillet you dont see much fat in the bottom of the pan.

I have been sticking to the 96/4, I can get it at wal-mart for 3.48/lb. After eating clean for a while, your tastebuds get used to it.

buy GOOD QUALITY beef and have it ground. Only way you will know for sure what is in your patties.

Hey, nobody said this was cheap

stop buying the fatty shit, and buy the 93/7... ;)

I'm on a grad school budget, which is shite. I'm almost forced to buy the 85/15 at Publix because of the price. 2lbs of 93/7 runs $10-12 for 2lbs, which 2lbs of 85/15 is $5.
One thing I do though is drain the fat. After I cook the meat, especially if I have cooked it ground up taco style, I throw it in a drainer to drain off the fatty juices, and then use some paper towels and press it to soak up some of the fatty juices as well.
I did a science fair project on this in HS. You do loose some fat when cooking, especially if you drain and press it. If you are interested, do a pre-cook weigh in of the meat, and a post cook weigh in. The meat looses alot of weight. There are some calculations you have to do with mass as well, which I don't remember, but I guarantee you are loosing some fat to cooking.

I've honestly never thought of buying it and then having it ground, great idea; thanks! Yes, I agree keeping a good diet is not cheap, but I'll sacrifice other things to try to keep my diet up to par the best I can.
