Bulking.....How clean do you eat?

big_bad_buff

New member
Don't give me the nothing but tuna, steak and rice jazz. what are the do's and don'ts for you while bulking?

will you eat hamburger helpers? sweets? cereals? juices? fatty meats? starches? etc.

No sugar at all, oatmeal and a hot pocket are the most processed foods I eat, and that's for breakfast.

Everything else is meat, carbs, and veggies in various recipes. Subs, chili, protein pancakes, chicken. The occasional natural preserves and fruit. The occasional nasty-ass pure protein shake.

Works okay for me.

When I bulk i throw in all that extra stuff I wouldn't touch when I'm cutting. Like Cheese on my roast beef sandwiches. Mayo with my tuna. Less lean cuts of beef (like T-bone steaks instead of top round). Whole eggs instead of whites. LOTS of ketchup on EVERYTHING, orange juice, fruits blah blah blah, you get the idea.

As to junk food, I'll have some every now and then, like pizza or hamburgers, but I try and keep it to a minimum.

my main food groups are, but not limited to: spaghetti, burgers, chicken, breads, oatmeal, rice, potatoes, and pizza

i mix and match a couple for a meal every couple hours

I'm trying to bulk as clean as I can.

No milk because the carbs are all sugars.
No sugars, really.
No fructose of any kind, which is obviously, no fruit.
2g/lb Protein, made up from tuna and chicken breast
Maple Granola in the AM and PM post-workout - Very good source of carbs
I use no mayo with the tuna, use the George Foreman on the chicken. I have aspargus with the chicken, and a can of tuna.

Yeah, I'll just post my diet... But uhm, I may start adding ketchup on eggs, I remember how easy they were to eat that way. Thanks for the idea Haz!

I'm a li'l too paranoid with bulking as perfect as possible, so from now on, if I get cravings I'll submit to them. So long as the majority of my diet's healthy and filed with EFAs, protein and healthy carbs (not many sugars) I should be okay.

Meal 1 (6:00 AM)
3 Egg Whites
Oatmeal
1 Tbsp Flaxseed
Multivitamin & Minerals

Meal 2 (9:00 AM)
1 Cup Maple Granola
Whey Protein Powder

2 Tbsp Natural PB

Meal 4 (3:00 PM)
5 oz. chicken breast
5 Spears Of Asparagus
Tuna

Meal 5 (6:00 PM - Post Workout)
Whey Protein Powder

1/2 Cup Maple Granola

Meal 6 (7:30 PM)
5 oz. chicken breast
5 Spears Of Asparagus

legion, just my opinion, but i think you should have more carbs in there

I am eating everything but candy.

In the last 24 hours I have had pizza, chicken, hamburgers, eggs and tons of other foods. I will eat ironhead pudding shortly.

Jeremys, just curious why ya' think so...

And if I do really need it, I'll just munch on that granola. 1/2 cup is 36 carbs. And it's really good too. Just, gotta chew it up alow. Ech, I get tired of it after awhile.

In fact, all that tuna I have on there, is without any condiments. Just drained and then eaten from the can. I'm getting really sick of tuna now... bleh. Maybe I should put ketchup on that too. It seems to work on everything.

Or hot sauce! Haha! ;)

good luck with the hot sauce, i think you'd shit like a muskrat. lol

bulking diets that have worked for many people consist of high carbs. a 2:1 ratio or a 3:1 ratio of carbs to protein is apparently optimal.

Wow some of you eat clean for a "bulking diet". For me, the only way to bulk up is to get on a "see food" diet. I have a hard time gaining mass, so I really try to consume everything possible all within reason of course.

It is easy to get burned out on tuna;) . It happened to me about 3 years ago!! It got so bad that I nearly barfed everytime I put it in my mout. However, I ate other fish such as orange ruffy and salmon.

If tuna was the last food on earth. . . . . I would starve to death.

Heh, well flax is also rancid, so I think I can force down tuna. Plus, I eat it with other stuff, so I'm gonna try tuna mixed in with some granola. It'll add texture. The tuna with the PB&J is fine, because it's the first tuna of the day and the Natty PB is amazing to shove it down with. The tuna ate with chicken is the worst. It's alot of volume first off, so eating that 5 oz. of chicken is bad enough. The asparagus is the best part, haha!

I don't know what else I could add in terms of carbs to this diet.

I'm 165 or so still, because I just officially started properly bulking yesterday, in whatever way "proper" may apply. So, I can still gain off this though, right? I mean, I started these once a week splits like three months ago, and only got serious about a month, so my gains are probably still gonna be somewhere near beginner.

Not to mention, my BW x 15 is 2400, and I'm consuming 2900 calories or so. Plus, 320 grams of protein or something. If I were to make it a 3:1 ratio, hell even 2:1, I'd have like 3600 calories or something. Think about all those extra calories from carbs. I'm having a hard enough time stomaching this stuff, so it's either add some more carbs and minus some proteins...

Or just keep it as it is.

Gonna have fun with this one...have to do squats first:)

Hmmm...you're bulking at 2900 calories?

Let's see what I eat on average...

Breakfast: Bowl of bran buds for fiber with 2% milk, 55 g protein powder mixed in 2 cups of milk, and 3 tablespoons olive oil

Meal 2: Double whopper with cheese, and a pint of Ben & Jerrys

workout

Post-workout, ~100 g protein 150 g dextrose

Meal 4: applebees all you can eat boneless buffalo wings, 5 plates worth or so, mmm...

Meal 5: Protein drink in milk with 3 tblspoons olive oil

Meal 6: 14 oz Ribeye steak, potatoes, loaf of wheat bread about the size of a softball.

Before bed: Protein drink in water

The calories? Your guess is as good as mine, the protein probably gets up to 3x my BW. I don't gain that much fat because I generally keep carbs low after 6-7 PM or so...not always though for example this day...

I'll gain some fat but considerably more muscle.

how many of you will eat just about anything when bulking? such as pork chops, tortillas, taco bell, cereals, ramen soup, pretty much anything, empty calories. not so much as donuts and candy, but junk you eat at restaurants with all the white sauces and bread rolls, beans etc, without having a second thought about it.

I would qualify!!;) Anything but candies, cakes, donuts, and etc.

i actually get sick if i have much sugar, so i'm kinda forced to eat not so crappy

As far as I am concerned, dieting should be left if you are getting ready for a contest. Right now, my goal is to develop size and strength and the only way to do this is by eating a ton of food and training like a freak in the gym. This is what I do!

How clean do I eat???

I always make sure my plate, fork, spoon, drinking glass, and knife have been washed and I always run my hands under some warm water with soap on them...

Those are empty calories? I love pork chops, tortillas, taco bell, donuts, cake, bread, etc...

You just have to balance them with good food (tuna, hamburger, chicken, oatmeal, rice, etc...). Seriously...if you eat clean foods all the time...you aren't really bulking. Add something "dirty" to EVERY meal...if you insist on eating "clean".

I try to shove 75% good shit down my throat....
The other 25%, I just make sure its loaded with protein...
Heres what I ate on Monday...

8:30am
3 eggs, 2 packs regular quaker instant oatmeal, 1 bannana, 1 tablespoon peanut butter, 3 g creatine, 400 ml water (all blended up)

10am
1 cup of almonds

12pm
1 1/2 lb Cheese and bacon burger with potato wedges and pumpkin coleslaw

330pm workout

5pm
4 eggs, 2 packs regular quaker instant oatmeal, 1 bannana, 1 tablespoon peanut butter, 3 g creatine, 400 ml water (all blended up)

6:30pm
4 baby burgers from A&W

11pm
1 roasted chicken and cheddar cheese sandwhich on 7 grain bread and half a toblerone chocolate bar.

I'm guessing this was at least 4500 calories.. probably more.
Thats an example of a very 'dirty' day for me...
In the last 2 weeks I've had at least 5 turkey dinners smothered in gravy and cranberries too... Bulking RULES

I don't eat everything but I'm not that strict with my diet. I find that if I eat too clean I can't gain weight.

As long as I get 400 grams of protein, mostly from red meat and shakes. I eat anything I want. I don't eat donuts or cakes and stuff, I just don't crave 'em. Wendy's is my girlfriend.

how many of you have your bulking diet down cold? were you know how much, and what you can eat, were you will gain muscle, but the least amount of fat as possible? this is what i'm trying to master, i know if you eat everything in site, your going to gain weight, but what is the fat/muscle ratio going to be of the weight you gain?

this will be the first year i'm not going to go on a cutting diet for the summer, so i'm looking for advice, obviously it's a lot of trail and error, but i don't want to gain 20 pounds of fat this year, and i don't want to cut myself short by any means. i just don't want to be on a cutting diet for 6 months burning the shit off once i decide to cut up.

You're gonna have to eat clean. Even then, you'll still gain some fat, I believe.

Add some cheat days in, but try and make the rest of your diet up of clean food.

This topic has been addressed for years nonstop on the diet board.

If you are putting on muscle, your going to put on fat too. You require an overabundance of nutrients to grow. Much of it depends on the person (metabolism) and how advanced they already are and if they are 'on'.

I notice I put on more muscle and less fat if I get most of my eating in within the first 6 hours after workong out. Post workout shakes should be loaded to the gils with dextrose and light easily digested protiens. 1 right after, another 1 hour later then 1 hour after that get your eats on. Rest days you can back off the carbs.

Don't mistake a little carb bloat as fat.

Is this too clean for a bulking cycle/

Please give me feedback on my mean plan, as I am on a bulking cycle.

Buff-
I think I got my bulking diet down cold. Been gaining about one pound a week, sometimes I eat more than usual and tank up water, but so far I haven't gained much chub at all. You can always try cycling calories if you want to avoid fat gain.

i eat everything except candy, chips, and shit like bacon (unless it's on a double bacon cheeseburger...mmm).

hell, i even have chips once every week or two.

in the past few months, i have put on 10lbs of LEAN muscle. I have eaten chinese food at least 10 times, fast food burgers at least 10 times (arbys as well), and pizza 5 or 6 times.

other than that, it's been oatmeal, smokies, burgers (made from the cow we bought), roast (ditto), weight gainer, and AT LEAST 15 t bone steaks.

i love my teenage metabolism.

care to share your diet? are you on a cycle?

im 2 clean

i bulk very clean becuase al i want is muscle growth and not fat i dont want to have to to cut for three years just go get cut. I bulk on alot of peanutbutter,tuna,mayo,chicken,steak,peanuts/nuts,protein shakes, eggs, oatmeal, potatos, veggies, wheat bread, atkins low carb high protein pancakes, atkins chocolate pancakes, and many other clean foods

every once in a while il have a peice of apple pie or somehting i usualy have a high protein dessert around the house!or when we go out to eat its on!!!

iv gained 10 pounds of rock hard muscle

When i want to bulk up i just eat anything really, no rules, no restrictions. Sweets, cookies, pizza, mcdonalds, ice cream, cake, pies, donuts, chips ect ect..........

im serious, i know along side the stuff thats been mentioned it looks stupid but i find that if you want to bulk up and add strength/muscle then you have to eat like a freakin horse!
Obviously try and eat as much healthy foods as possible, but also get the calories up with the 'junk foods'.

I have a fast metabolism and can get away with eating pretty much what i want without getting fat so this method of just getting any food down me works very well when bulking.

I carry about 14% body fat, so I feel I am bulked enough. I really want to get down to 9% bf. I eat about 2400 calories a day with a ratio of 50% protien 40% carbs and 10% fat.

I eat clean.... for the most part.

Meal 1: Oatmeal w/non-fat milk

Meal 2: Protein Shake

Meal 3: Can of Tuna, cup of Brocolli, 2 hb eggs (drop the yoke)

Meal 4: Two chicken breasts skinless/ Black Beans

Meal 5: MetRx Bar

Meal 6: Salmon Fillet, Spinich

Thats it more or less (add a shake here or there) I try to maintain about 250 grams of protien a day (I weight 206lbs at 5'7")

Never on cycle. Just listen to your body. I usually eat whatever, but if I notice I'm holding alot of water, I cut out the crap and eat clean at around the same level of calories for 2 or 3 days. That brings me back to normal, then I start eating whatever I feel like again. No idea how many calories, but I eat 5 or 6 meals and usually eat stuff in between. My metabolism is strange, as I used to weigh a pretty solid 250 (probably 15 - 20%bf) and now I'm stuck just below 200 (was 7%+ a few months ago) no matter what. Sometimes I can go up to 205 for a day, then I piss it out.

And does this work????? eating everythang in site???? or do u gain maaaaad fat???? se ei have mad amounts of fat already n i dont want to gain mor so its crazy hard in the future to lose it!

bulking

hey guys im new to this board,

i think the best answer to the question is that it depends on what your goals are and your body type. EVERYONE is different I know a buddy of mine who works out once in a while and eats like SHIT but is able to gain amazing lean muscle mass. Some ppl can do that, others will turn into blobs and others will gain moderatly.
Your genetics and the way your body works is the main thing. You have to know your body and then decide on your goals. If you just want some mad size and dont care about the fat then eat everything in sight, but if you want to gain muscle a bit slower but with less fat than count your calories, and meals and watch your weight week after week. And make sure your only gaining 1-2 pounds a week MAX, anything above that is fat.

I'm curious do most of you that eat anything when bulking go on a pretty serious, strict and long cutting cycle?? I dunno if i could stand to cut for too long, and am not sure how much to bulk.
