Buddy aged 40 wants to start BB

Bro, I say get him in the gym for 6 wks. to get back into a groove and to get a lot of initial soreness out of his system and then a test only cycle 500 mgs. wk. for 10 wks. Let a 40 year old brother feel the joys of the younger days of testosterone flowing through his veins and pumping up his manhood! One of the hardest things about starting up again at 40 will be motivation. Give him something to look forward to after 6 wks! It will take the test about 4 wks. to start to show anyhow so that's a good 2 1/2 months in the gym. I say go for it! There are guys at 40 who don't workout but are on HRT so why not? Just have him stay away from flat barbell bench, heavy squats, etc....things that can put strain on the joints because recovery will be a bitch. If he starts to see results he may want to go heavier but the muscle will build faster than the tendons and joints might be able to hande. Happened to me. I will be 40 next year. A couple of years ago on a test/eq cycle my bench was jumping up every week and it eventually took a toll on my shoulders. Doc said it was wear and tear. I've always been active too, either lifting or boxing so it's just a word of caution. Train smart. If he was in his 20's I'd say train for a year or 2 naturally first but at 40... a test only cycle will do his body good! Make sure he at least takes saw palmetto as well for his prostate!

Have your friend at least take a look at Albert Beckles for inspiration:

Name: Albert Beckles

Nickname: Albert "Peak" Beckles

Born: July 14, 1930

Hair: Black

Eyes: Brown

Cuurent Residence: North Hollywood, California

1985 Night of Champions - IFBB, Winner at 55 years of age!!

Ageless Albert Beckles had an excellent career in professional bodybuilding for four decades! His reign ended in 1991, where he qualified for the Mr. Olympia and competed in the competition at the age of 61! Albert is truly testamount to the power of bodybuilding and the bodybuilding lifestyle. Currently, at the age of 73, he is still active in bodybuilding and bodybuilding shows where he works as a judge for the IFBB. He will go down in the bodybuilding hall of fame along with other greats such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno, Franco Columbu and many more. He has made the covers of many bodybuilding magazines and was the focus of many bodybuilding articles throughout his long and successful career. In 1985, at the age of 55, he placed 2nd at the Mr. Olympia competition at the age of 55, and some say he could have taken the show that year or the year to follow (Lee Haney ended up winning both shows). What he accomplished in the ranks of professional bodybuilding was truly incredible and second to none.
