doesn't the new crysis game run on 1/3 the power?? I thought I read that they actually spent time properly coding the game so that it can run on high setting on a relatively inexpensive systems.
Hansel, how the vid card situation looking now? Are they coming out with new9800's that actually outplay 88's??
As far as I've read Crysis: Warhead has similar req's plus a 14 gig install.
Tough to say how strong Nvidia is lately. Tom's Hardware had a report on the Nvidia G84/G86 chips. Apparently "all" are defective (heat related), regardless of desktop or laptop app. From the low-mid range GeForce 8 series (8300-8600).
Why it took this long to discover this is strange, considering that chipset is over a year old but it sucks for them no less. Glad I sold mine.
AMD's newly acquired ATI Graphics is making strides to compete with Nvidia.
I think Intel and Nvidia are also still feuding, and Intel has plans to develop an on-board graphics chip in their upcoming processors.
Nvidia seems to be flustered that they have stiff competition from ATI again, and though their newest cards from the 9 series mostly tested well, they just "barely" tamed Crysis maxed out. Of course what resolution you're playing in is a big part of that as well. 2560x1600 is obviously more taxing than 1920x1200, and so on.
I myself am still happy with my ATI 3870 HD. The new 4870 cards (especially X2) are a better value than its Nvidia 9 Series counterparts, but in either case it depends on how much more you're willing to spend for a very modest performance increase.
If I were you and could burn cash on any card now, I'd hands down get the 4870 X2. It seems to be the latest and greatest.
