MOSCOW, Russia (CNN) -- Gunfire has been heard from a Moscow movie theatre where about 20 armed gunmen are reported to be holding the audience, believed to be up to 1000 people, hostage.

CNN's Ryan Chilcote said five gunshots were heard coming from the building and said the situation was chaotic.

He said that Russia's elite Alpha Group of crack security troops had been called to the scene, marking it out as a serious incident.

Interfax, one of whose reporters was in the theatre at the time, said the gunmen had allowed members of the audience to make phone calls and children to be released.

The gunmen fired shots into the air as they entered the theatre. Muslim members of the audience attending the production of "North-East" were also allowed to leave, Interfax said.

Police teams rushed to the scene but there were no initial reports of casualties.

Chilcote said it was unable to say at this stage whether the siege was connected to the conflict in the breakaway region of Chechnya. The auditorium could hold about 1000 people.

The theatre -- "the Palace of Culture" formerly for workers of a ballbearing plant -- was staging a performance of the musical "Nord-Ost," one of the Russian capital's most popular productions.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was immediately told of the hostage taking, Interfax reported.

Located in southeastern Moscow in a working class neighbourhood, the musical is based on Veniamin Kaverin's novel "Two Captains."

The romantic novel recounts the story of two students and their different destinies during the Soviet times.

According to the theater's Web site, more than 350,000 people have seen the production since it opened.

It's funny, people keep preaching tolerance and blah blah blah. Muslims justify all the shit they do by saying they are being persecuted, yet they are the ones who make it a point to kill people based on their religion (non-muslims). Listen to rap music and watch some movies if you dont believe me. Or just hang around some blacks.

I'm getting sick of seeing stories about Muslims terrorizing countries all over the world. WTF is going on with that!

It's impossible to predict, but based on past performance I expect 20-30 dead terrorists.

You talking hostages or terrorists? Assuming the former, I'd say you are unfamiliar with the russian anti-terrorist unit. Regardless, if a raid takes place in a situation as tactically unfriendly as this, one would expect innocent casualties.
 
that was a bad move on their part. this is just going to give russia a reason to vote yes on the UN security council.....as if we needed their approval in the first place.

First, stereotyping all "muslims" as killers is ignorant.

But, I just wanted to make a note about political correctness and television network news. I just them change the story from muslims released to "non-russians" relesed.
 
They shouldnt change a thing. By changing the story they are misleading and omitting important facts. Ya know in some situations thats a federal offence. If they are going to tell us the story they should tell us important details about it. Obviously terrorism is suspected, so why not say they let out all the muslims. The whole idea of the story now changes once they say they let out all non russians.

You should have heard the guy's voice when he said "uhh, uhh, they're telling us 'non-russians." You know he'd been saying muslims durring each update for the past hour.
 
it's best not to make assumptions about anything now anyway. Lets just wait it out. As with anything the truth comes out eventually.
 
My point on the casualties was that there would probably be a better chance that higher Innocent casualties would be had compared to the Liberal safe nature of US swat teams.

We would want to talk it out for days
vs the Russians will likely talk for a few Min, then storm the joint shooting and hoping for the best outcome.. IMO

Based on their past performances against Chechen terrorists very, very badly.

Actually it's not possible to underestimate the Russian army. The first time they invaded Chechnya, they got hammered in Grozny, the Capital. Grozny was about 50% Russian by ethnicity, old world-war II widows retired there, it was in the warm south, like florida for Russians. The Chechen civilians mostly abandoned the city leaving it full of old Russian ladies, who were waiting to be "rescued" by the advancing Russian troops. So what did the Russians do?

They flattened the city with artillery and heavy bombers. 40,000 - 60,000 old RUSSIAN women died.

When the Chechens have taken hostages before, like they did in that hospital in Budonyosk (sp?) in southern Russia in '96 or so, the Russians stormed the hospital, killed half the hostages and were defeated by the Chechens who headed off in a motorcade of buses back to Chechnya with the remaining hostages, where they GOT AWAY, despite being shadowed by helicopter gunships. The guy who headed up that caper, Shamil Basayev, is still a major Chechen warlord.

Let's not forget either that the Russian Secret Service was caught red-handed in the Moscow apartment bombings where over 300 died, in an operation to justify the second invasion of Chechnya.
 
Apparently the Russians have moved in and are now in control of the theatre. No word on the amount of hostages or terrorists killed yet.
 
Russian guys have killed all the chechen terrorist. ALL OF THEM ARE DEAD NOW. Russians decided to go in right after those fuckers killed two hostages. Those fucking chechens were drunk when our guys came in.
There were a hell alot of weapon inside of the building, how could they bring all this stuff in there?
