The Noble Savage

I am as free as nature first made man,
Ere the base laws of servitude began,
When wild in woods the noble savage ran.

This doctrine, "the idea that humans are peaceable by nature and corrupted by modern institutions—pops up frequently in the writing of public intellectuals like José Ortega y Gasset ("War is not an instinct but an invention"), Stephen Jay Gould ("Homo sapiens is not an evil or destructive species"), and Ashley Montagu ("Biological studies lend support to the ethic of universal brotherhood")," he writes. "But, now that social scientists have started to count bodies in different historical periods, they have discovered that the romantic theory gets it backward: Far from causing us to become more violent, something in modernity and its cultural institutions has made us nobler."

The entire Song of Ice and Fire series if you haven't read it yet. You have 2 months to get through the first 3 books or so before season 3 of GoT starts.

neither are accomplished, mostly just recovering drug addicts

WHAT!

They both have interesting stories, which I would say is the main thing when reading a book. And if you are going to play music and end up in the Rock and Roll hall of fame, I'd say that's a pretty good measure of accomplishment.

Both are wealthy (ex?) junkies, but that's beside the point. We are talking about books to read.

And unless said Julliard grad has written a song that compares in any way to Gimme Shelter, I would suggest that the above mentioned Julliard grad STFU.
