Bloody shins when deadlifting

Hi, i have been on the Cornholio Old School program, for 4 weeks. That means on Mon I have to do 1x20 stiff legged DL, and on Wed 1x20 regular DL. The stiff legged are ok but on Wed my shins really get banged up

Am I doing something wrong, do i need to work on my form?? or what? anyone else have this problem, what do you do about it? not that i care that much but its been getting a bit worse lately.

P.S. when I started I DL'ed 65 lbs for 20 reps both stiff and regular. now I DL 115 lbs for 20 reps both stiff and regular :)

BTW when i started lifting again, squats were my favorite exercise by far, but now i really think i like deadlifts more! squats I really only feel the burn in my butt and thighs, deadlifts I feel it from traps to calf!

I don't get the shins banged up on stiff legged deadlifts in the slightest. I get the best effect by rocking back on my heels during them, it slams your hamstrings and glutes better, IMO.

The bar really never comes close to my shins...

BTW... Cornholio old school????

I haven't had shin problems just yet... but i'm new to deads and my knees are all bruised up! The price to pay for growing! :)

Powerlifters put baby powder on their shins and thighs to prevent this as much as possible. I don't lift enough yet to have this problem, but that's what the Big Guys [tm] in my gym do.

Thats just something that happens with deads. If you look at competition pics of big deadlifters, they always have torn up shins. Baby powder might help slightly. I have heard of some people doing them in lycra tights too. I just prefer to deal with it. Most people look like goons in lycra tights.

You should be keeping the bar close to your body throughout the entire movement...it should be running up and down your shins and all the way up and down your front quads throughout the whole time, bar should never leave contact with your body....sometimes the bar rubs my shins raw, but you just have to be conscience of it and a little careful, but like previously mentioned, it's the price you pay to get awesome gains from this amazing exercise....so stop snibbling!:D

Blood, sweat, chalk, tears, and screaming, now that's a great day in the gym. My shins are all scarred up from deads just part of the fun.

Cheers,
Scotsman

I don't remember hurting my shins on deadlifts. But my thighs and forarms are blood-red on extreme lifts. I understand the thighs, as the gnarling scrapes by them, but I had a hard time figuring out the inner forearms. I think it was because they scraped by weightbelt.

LOL - first time I did it, I thought I popped a blood vessel.
Have to admit, after the rush of completing a heavy lift, the look and feel of the thigh/forearm burns spiked me up like an wild animal.

Now I'm a pussy and do less weight on deads (more reps, probably better form). :) It's less impressive looking to me...

AS FOR YOU - I'm not qualified to give training technique advice, but maybe you're lifting with your back too early and not your legs? My knees are over the bar at the start, but my knees usually are clear of the bar (or slide/bump) in the middle.

Maybe try practising with less weight until you get the form you want? I've been doing that with the timing of my Olympic lifts...

I've seen some oly lifters stick a strip of medical bandage tape running along the shins in comps, its an idea

Otherwise just wrap something around the bar

I had the same problem until B-Fold mentioned to step about 3-5 inches away from the bar when you pull. The movement should be more of pulling "BACK" rather than "UP" (This also helped alleviate some of the form issues I had with my ass coming up to soon in the lift.)

What I do, is drop my butt, and pull back towards my knees. My thighs and knees to take a bit a beating, but this has helped reduce to eliminate the scraping on my shins.

Watch some of the videos that B-Fold has posted of him deadlifting. That helped me visualize this idea very well.

When I deadlifted, I took advantage of it and drug the shit out of my shins as another way of conditioning them. Works well, but I've got lots of red topped socks now:confused:
