Black Metal Recommendations

I'm not so much into the faster than fast stuff, more into the nearly ambient shit.

The new Velvet Cacoon is pretty good and Leviathan is fantastic. Weakling and Blut Aus Nord bring the awesome in so many ways.

On the other end of the specturm, Xasthur doesn't do much for me but I only have one album. Dimmu Borgir sucks. I'm sorry, they do. I can barely make it through one Secrets of the Moon song, let alone a whole album.

I'm kind of on the fence when it comes to Sear Bliss, Emperor, and 1349. Some shit is great, some isn't.

I'm going to guess that this thread gets two replies and both of them will be:

Living Color/Sevendust is my favorite black metal band!

Oh man! What an awesome name for a band! Does Poison have wicked hard breakdowns?

- Some high school metalcore kid

:lmao: @ the Living Color/Sevendust comment.

That's about all I got. I'm not big into "Black Metal" as a genre.

lmao, dude I work with said this exact same thing yesterday.

Let's see, if you're going to get into black metal, why not start with the pioneers? Hit up some Venom. Some Bathory.

That's about the extent of my knowledge in the genre. lol

Nah, I know a few bands ... Check out ...

Old Man's Child: symphonic black metal, like Dimmu, but less mainstream
...And Oceans: black metal with electronics ... kinda cool, but I couldn't really get into them
Impaled Nazarene: I've heard one song, but it rawked. (Song was called "The Endless War")

lol, Venom! i saw them like 6 or 7 years ago, they are pretty fucking big dudes too, bigger than Danzig atleast.

Black metal died years ago. Check out some of the real BM from the pioneers -- Venom, Bathory, Burzum, Mayhem, Emperor, Satyricon, Immortal, Darkthrone, Dimmu, Arcturus, Ulver, Storm, Isengard, Neptune Towers... way too many bands and side projects to name even from the original first or second generation era of BM.

Impaled Nazarene only do joke music; that's their style. They're funny, though.

There's so much new age poofter "look-at-me-I'm-scary-cause-I-wear-spikes-and-corpse-paint-and-suck-Cradle-of-Filth's-and-Dimmu's--popular-ass's" black metal out that I lost interest in what little was left in the original 'scene'. I'm sure there's some good stuff out there, but I sure as hell ain't going to sift through all the garbage to find it.

Black metal wasn't founded on music or talent... it was founded on feeling, atmosphere, and principal. That's why it's a joke nowadays. Black metal being advertised with a 'clean-sounding production' ain't black metal. The death metal guys have been laughing at black metal for years... there's a good reason why.

Yeah, the scene is beyond parody now especially with Satyricon being brought up on rape charges. Seriously, what was that girl doing on that tour bus in the first place? Looking for the next Spiral Architect album that's never going to come out?

young guns - Forefather is cool, I'll check them out further. Not really what I was looking for, but cool nonetheless.

From Zero - I've been meaning to check out Old Man's Child for years and years. ...And Oceans sounds kind of neat. Impaled Nazarene is fun and the same goes for Finntroll.

Thanks people.

That was a bad song for you to sample. They seemed to have dropped any likeness to black metal vocals by that album.

The song I meant to post a link for was "Fighting Man" but it must have been taken off the site. That song has the raspy vocals you'd expect in black metal, along with clean vocals.

Borknagar's second (Garm) or third (Vortex) albums;
Vintersorg circa second or third release (before he forgot how to sing);
Vintersorg's fourth or fifth album if you really like him;
Arcturus;
Ulver, Trilogie era;

Black metal mixed with clean vocals is a much larger and more diverse area of the genre... it's also the more popular. I'm interested to see what kind of metamorphasis BM will go through in the future. TNBM died off long ago, since there's only so much a band like Darkthrone or Gorgoroth can do before it becomes too repetitive. And with CoF and Dimmu cracking the top 100 charts (W... T... F... ?) anything is possible.

Borknagar's new one is good, forgot to mention that.

First time I ever heard anyone say that about their new album. Vinternagar's new album sounds pretty similar to Vintersorg's new stuff... only problem is that Vintersorg is alienating quite a few fans with his lack of quality vocals over the last few albums from both his band and his side-projects.

Cutting his hair off didn't help, either. He looks pretty bad without it, and the fanzines have been having a field day with it.
