GENEVA (AP)--Bill Gates said he is using the same strategy that succeeded in building Microsoft Corp. to tackle his latest challenge -fighting AIDS, malaria and other deadly diseases around the world.

The featured speaker at the World Health Organization's annual assembly, Gates told the 192-nation body he was adding another $250 million -for a total of $450 million -to one of his projects: getting "the world's top scientific minds to take on the world's deadliest diseases."

Gates told The Associated Press that using great minds was part of the approach he has used in building Microsoft.

"The idea of hiring very smart people and getting them to take on very optimistic goals and finding partners and believing in science -that's very similar to the work I do at Microsoft," he said.

"Of course, it's different, but a lot of elements of what you need to bring together are very much the same. It's the same idea as creating things that are going to have to be extremely low cost, but that can benefit millions and millions of people."

The foundation Gates runs with his wife already has given more than $4 billion to efforts to combat disease. The new money is for a special project, Grand Challenges in Global Health, involving leading scientists.

Scientists from more than 80 countries sent in thousands of pages of ideas, he said. Ideas included vaccines that don't need refrigeration, easy-to-use devices to detect life-threatening fevers and drugs that attack diseases hiding from the immune system.

"We were so taken with the response that we increased our commitment to this research," Gates told the assembly.

Go Bill Gates. Show them how it is done.

I think its great he's putting his money to great use. I know he donates a lot of his money but the next generations under the Gates family are set forever... Glad to see him putting it to use.

Gates is not willing all his funds to his heirs. I am sure they will be set up nicely, but dude and his wife are true philanthropist. expect his kids to pave their own way rather than being lazy bastards living off of Daddy's or Mommy's Money...

Like those Gotti boys....LOLOL

This is the same guy who missed the internet.

Nice gesture, but $250 million will be pocket change. Plus this idea of "throw money at it and we'll find the cure" is no guarantee. In fact, it's silly. If it was plausible, the US government would throw $250 million in a heartbeat if it mean new cures that could cut the costs of healthcare by billions over the next 10 years.

If you really want to find cures -- get more young people into the medical field, improve the flow of global communication, press for tax incentives for medical R&D by private firms, get new drugs passed quicker, and encourage more co-operation among competing medical companies, with agreements on profit-sharing once advances are made.

Unless, this is what he's doing -- and this article just "dumbed it down" for the average reader.

Either way, his heart's in the right place -- but i don't know if it'll amount to anything in the long run.

I'm always wary when i read the words "Pledging" with nothing more detailed provided after that.

Good to see he's not greedy.

There isn't money in cures. Drug companies make way more offering "treatments"

Invent a "cure" for cancer, and walk into downtown wall street and ask for investors. Let us know how many billions get thrown at you.

he has said each child will get .0002 (.02%) of his wealth

It works out to $10 million of todays dollars.

he wants them to have enough money to do whatever they would love to do, but not enough money so that they can do nothing.

how you figure, that would only be the case if the cure meant you need to take "X" for the rest of the life and you wouldnt die from cancer, aids, etc. A one time cure for something like AIDS would be devastating to the drug companies.

sure, investors would see a huge opportunity to make money, but the people with the power wouldnt allow it.

The profits that one company could make in one shot with a captive desperate market would be mind-boggling.

And people will be getting cancer forever, globally -- so you can always keep selling that $250,000 pill as long as you want. Forever.

What a morbid negative view of the people who sweat blood 80 hours a week trying to make people's lives better!

And by understand that, you also now undersatnd why i'm ALL FOR highly increased free-market drug prices. It helps pay for the R&D and encourages advanced cures and treatments.

Makes sense now to have $200 tablets w/o government interference doesn't it? :)

I think Medical patents are only 7 years, so they could make generics after that time
8 i think....unless it changed

currently a single drug costs 500 mill to develop, so it isnt like gates is going to drown the problem in money - but someone who has built an organisation like his and likely has some of the best labour money can buy might set up a successful drug company/research apparatus, if its philanthropic - we all saw how quickly the SARS issue was dealt with when everyone wanted to work together, rather than keep their findings secret (in case you dont know, years worth of progress was made in months, because of disclosure)

anyway, we'll see

cheers

Bill Gates is a Christian. Think of that. None of you would be on here tonight if not for a Christian man.

The internet was around long before bill.

It's a step in the right direction and it won't hurt anyone to at least try. I'm looking for the ulterior motive?

Private funding is very good for cures for third world problems. Take AIDS, If a company came up with a cure they would forced to sell it in Africa at cost or next to cost. Drugs are business pure and simple. You don't make drugs for poor people. The company that put out a polio vaccine never made money from it. They were forced to sell it cheap to the poor.

LOL. Your crusade is becoming ludicrous. Do you have any idea how outright arrogant and Un-Christian that remark is? If you're going all-out Jerry Falwell sytle you ought to consider revising your username. Although fitting (in a sense) it dosen't really help your new Jesus-loving image.

No I don't. I stand by what I said. Except I may have been wrong about the internet comment. I don't care what anyone thinks. I know that my outspokenness has already helped several people. I will not be silenced except by corruptness.

What I wrote wasn't hateful. Infact his post was way more offensive than anything I've said about him.
