Big but not bald!

Q: Which steroids lead to hair loss and which don't? Could you recommend a few stacks for those of us who have funny shaped heads and would look dumb bald?

A: Testosterone can lead to hair loss simply because it can reduce via the enzyme 5-alpha reductase to dihydroxytestosterone, or DHT. Of course, there are other androgens that don't reduce but still cause androgenic alopecia (hair loss). One in particular would be trenbolone. I — along with a few acquaintances — have experienced quite a bit of hair loss with this particular androgen. The strange thing is that we don't experience the same thing when using Testosterone, although most people do. Weird.

Aside from that, methandrostenolone (D-bol) is something you may want to stay away from. Also, some people claim stanozolol (Winstrol) can cause alopecia although I haven't found this to be the case.

So, essentially, what you're left with is methenolone (acetate or enanthate), oxandrolone, boldenone, and nandrolone. If you use finasteride (Propecia or Proscar), Testosterone can become a fairly safe androgen in terms of not causing thinning hair.

And before anyone asks, no, you shouldn't use finasteride with any androgen other than Testosterone as it won't help. In the case of nandrolone, it may make things much worse.

My hair fell out while off for 5yrs.....:bawling: Man, I guess I learned my lesson on that one.........now I hope it grows back when I go back on on Monday!!!.......... :garza:

What do you mean it fell out for 5 years? After cycle?

For those using Finasteride with test, do you notice a much tamer sex drive than with just test alone? People don't appreciate the significance of DHT to the male organ and sex drive. Instead of using finasteride, a proven topical like azelaic acid makes a lot more sense. Finasteride was discovered from a chemical found in South America where they couldn't distinguish 12 year old boys from 12 year old girls amongst the indigenous tribe. DHT is essential to growth of the penis in adolescents and children. So, when they say that sexual side-effects are rare with Propecia (a lower dose of Finasteride), they are probably miseading a lot of people. I love the sex drive I have on testosterone. Again, the question is, from people who have used test alone AND, at other times, test with Finasteride, did you notice a much tamer sex drive with the Finasteride than without?

Wow, never thought about it this way! Bump for opinions!

yes definately notice the sex drive taken away while using Proscar with test. I won't use it anymore. Nizoral 2% seems to do the trick for me.

True, yes, finasteride has tamed my sex drive to some extent. (More so than the official line would have you believe.) When I stop taking it, there is a noticeable improvement. I like the hair thing though...

No. But if you were pre-pubescant maybe it would. But the reason I know that is because I did a internet search on DHT and test back in '96 before I was going to take Propecia and I got a medical research article that stated that the studies showed that DHT was essential to growth of the penis and that test without DHT was not effective. There were however a few instances where test alone compensated somewhat for growth but, by and large, no DHT leads to micro-penis! So, I'm not kissing my DHT goodbye -- especially if I can eliminate it at the scalp with a topical like azelaic acid but still have DHT circulating to the other tissues (penis, brain for sex drive aggression) where I want its benefits.

I believe that most of the influence of DHT on the penis is during the in utero period. It is part of sex drive and secondary sex characteristics, but I think the kids from that tribe (they had a congenital absence of 5AR, so could produce NO DHT) did mature sexually AFTER puberty. They just didn't ever develop baldness!

Weren't these actually a group of patients w/ 5-AR deficiency? I think this was one of the findings that lead to the development of finasteride. (ie, the understnding that in the absence of 5AR, no DHT was formed, and therefore no baldness).
Finasteride doesn't seem to effect my libido one way or another.

Buffdoc has a great sticky on hair loss. I lost a certain amount of hair from the age of 28 to 34 and then it stopped. It is thinning, very slowly now. I am 43. I was always told that your hair is genetically programmed at birth. Now I wear it so short it doesn't matter to me. I have not experienced and more hair loss while doing AS.

One of these days there will be a real solution to the problem.

Thanks for the kind word. You're right. 3 things: genetics, presence of androgens, passage for time.
Hair cloning may be a reality in 5 years or so. Cool!

I believe the tribal natives were eating a plant that had a chemical that acted like Finasteride. And Finasteride is the extract and synthesized result. How else could researchers discover a chemical that reduces 5-AR if the only cause in the trriabl indians was a genetic 5-AR deficiency?

I had always heard that stress can have a lot 2 do with hair loss. I'm sure some of the AS out there can cause more stress than others but they all will 2 some extreme right? I agree with buffdoc on this "3 things: genetics, presence of androgens, passage for time. "
