Big Brothers and Sisters

High End Bro

Posted on the 10 things thread about being a Big Brother for 5 years and was reminded about it yesterday when I ran into the uncle of the child I had.

The little boy I had was a great kid and had tons of potential, he came from a background where Mom was an alcoholic and was on welfare with no desire to get off it. A lot of times here a child of welfare follows down the same path.

The uncle told me that he is now 19 and has been on his own for over a year now. He is doing quite well and is getting involved in the computer field, he already works part time doing some computer stuff.

Apparently he has become quite the young man and is on his way to become a successful man and break the pattern that was set for him.

I would like to think that the years I spent with him helped in some way to become what I saw was inside of him.

The reason I am telling you all this is that there are a lot of boys and girls out there that could use someone, it only has to be a couple of hours a week. There are some great people on this board who could really make a difference.

What I found during Big Brother functions is that a lot of guys that went into this program were the outcasts growing up, with little social skills, self esteem and little ability in interacting with kids. I think its great that they give their time but it would be nice if more everyday people could get into these programs as this is what some of these kids need.

If you have some spare time, it can make a big difference in a childs life AND yours.

I've been interested in this for a long time, but never had the time to actually act on it...

Is there any additional information you have that isn't already on the website?
what is the time dedication?

When I was in it they asked for 2 hours a week. The main thing was to be consistent as some of the kids had Dad's in the picture at one time who would not always show up.

It costs little to no money, its all up to you. There are lots of events sponsored by them if someone didn't have the money. They try and stress what you do isn't as important as the time you spend with them.

Good work BigDawg. That is a really great program. With my hectic and unusual work schedule it would be unfair and nearly impossible for me to do it. Plus I might not be the best role model what with the belching contests and such I seem to find myself in a bunch.LOL

speaking of role models how do you think the mother felt when I showed up to pick up her son LOL.

I taught him a great many things, one of them how to play poker at 9 ;)

Him and I kicked all the nerdy Big Bros and thier little bros at camp :garza:

That's awesome. I know the looks I get just when I meet my friends parents, kind of that fear and wonder/ oh no it's godzilla look.

One year at the Big Bro camp one of my good friends who also was a big bro came and he brought a huge slingshot that two guys have to hold while the third lets go the ammo.

We must have had a hundred water balloons and shot them at the group way down the hill. It was like Whack a Nerd hehehehehe. All the little bros loved and wanted us to hit their Big Bros, the other Big Bros didn't see the humour LOL.
