Have any of you guy's ever volunteered for this??? If so, please share your experience. I am going to a meeting on the 12th of February to become a big brother, and would like a little insight.
Any information you can share, would be appreciated.
Thanks!!!

Let me know how that works out for you. I thought about doing that as well. I have too much free time lately and wanted to do some volunteer work... we also have a radio broadcast here that reads books for the blind, i thought of doing that too. I was gonna volunteer at the children's hospital but honestly couldn't take it... made me too sad.

Yes, I am currently active in this program. I have had some good and bad experiences with the program. My first lil' brother was an 8 year old and he was cool, but his Mom was impossible to work with. She lied too often and expected me to be her little errand boy or babysitter. The lil' I have now is much better and his mom is cool too. The main thing to remember is that you get the parents with this deal as well, and that a lot of them aren't easy to work with. Also try to choose an age you are comfortable with. I wasn't used to being around kids this age and had no idea that an 8 year old would start crying for his mom out of the blue. I was prepared to deal with that. The next time I tried to get someone a little older. The experience has been really rewarding and I'm glad I did it. I also coach a sixth grade basketball team at the local Optimists Club. That may be something you can look into as well. Good luck and my hat is off to you.

Crazier you are indeed a good person. I have been thinking about being a bigbrother too. I would like to expose them to wakeboarding. An awesome sport that is unreachable for some of those kids. I never thought about dealing with the parents but okie made some good points.

How do you go about registering to be a big brother and what are your resposibities of doing such? I mean how often are you suppose to hook with them to do stuff. I ask this because sometimes I have to go out of town alot on the weekends.

Thanks okie... and props to you as well bro.

Since you are in the program, I suppose I could ask you...

I would really like for my 5 year old daughter to be a part of this experience. While I am with the little brother, I'd like for her to be getting an important sense of humanity and a sense of caring for others. And, depending on the age, it could be fun for the two of them... playing in the park, going to movie's, etc...

Do you know if this would be allowed?

I am very active in the Boys and Girls club here in the area which is pretty similiar, however you work with a bunch of kids instead of being assigned to just one. I have enjoyed the kids a great deal and truly believe that I have gained probably just as much, if not more, from the experience. A person really needs to be patient, and open to new ideas and ways of life however. Most of the kids are not looking for another person in their life to give them a list of rules, they are looking for alternative ways to have fun. And I truly believe that it is important for these kids to gain self-confidence and to learn to be leaders with good choices instead of followers.

Crap,

According to that site there are no agencies within 60 miles of where I live(South Texas). Now what?

Well, I've always wanted to go wakeboarding... big brother. ;)

I'm not going to tell you that it isn't allowed, but they may not approve of it. My counselor wanted me and me only to be around my little, but it probably depends on the institution. They may prefer that you see the kid alone for awhile and then bring your daughter into the equation. That would be something for the parent to decide as well. If they encouraged the idea, then I'm sure it would be OK. The religion thing is also up to the parent. They may or may not want you pressing your opinions or beliefs upon their child. Remember, you are not raising this child...you are just there to help the kid be more well rounded. Good luck to you all!!

I've always wanted to do one of those programs, I love da childrens...but seriously it's a cool thing to take time out like that...good man :)
