Best Resolution

I have a 19" widescreen monitor and I am running vista on this computer.. I'm new to vista but whenever I start a program, say Itunes the screen will flicker and refresh.. like it's resizing. What resolution should I be running a widescreen at? Or does that flicker / black out / resizing thing just happen in vista?
