Best # Reps and Sets to max Bench Increases

Just wondering if anyone has any standards they go by when trying to add poundage to their bench press.

Example: 3 sets, 15-10-5 Flat and so on......

Most people on this forum do westside, metal militia, Starr's 5x5 or bigger-faster-stronger. Few powerlifters do the kind of workouts you are thinking of. Look intp metal militia bench training if you want to get the bench rockin'. Look into westside if you want to get all of the big 3 stronger.

The "westside" method is really called conjugate periodization , nicknamed westside because it was used at the westside barbell club in Ohio to create champion powerlifters. Here is a tight article on conjugate periodization -- everything you need head-to-toe.

Here is a great article from the even earlier formulation of westside which I found very helpful: Louie's view .

And the holy grail of it all -- prilepin's table

This is all for westside. I am no expert at all, but that ought to get you started. It would take years to truly understand and be adept at this system. Metal militia training can be found on their website. I don't feel competent to talk about the other 2 or 3 powerlifting training methods. Madcow will tell you about Starr's 5x5, I believe.

Yep, you need to get away from the bodybuilding mentality for a little while when strength becomes your goal. Maybe you'll never go back.

If you're looking for something well laid out that you can just dive into and get started with then give madcow's 5x5 a shot. There's a massive thread which madcow has recently revamped to help people get into it and he's usually on here every day. There's also lots of us who have run through the program in case he's not around.

Here's a link to his thread.
