best place to live?

Mezzanine

New member
Hi guys and gals. I am brand new to this site- looks pretty cool so far. Anyway, I was wondering what everyone thought was the best place to live? It could be anywhere on earth. I am really interested in what people think about differant places. I have always preferred to live near the ocean but I have been considering other options lately...

Well if i had to pick a place in america it would be Alaska(by the coast). As for the rest of the world, i would love some suggestions.

I do love the South...just laid back, more country people, dirt roads....I just love it.

I love the country stores, bottled cokes, and southern accents...

By landscape, environment, location, and weather I'd say Phoenix. I just don't care for the people here all that much. But you're 2 hours from snow skiiing, 2 hours from mexico, 2 hours from vegas, 3 hours from the beach. Everything's in a good setting.

Why dont you care for the people? I have considered living in Arizona, cant be much worse than living in So Cal- high rents, low wages, weirdos,REALLY high property prices, more weirdos etc...I am starting to think I should move to another planet. :alien:

the adults are ok. the college students are straight from the movie Clueless.

Sydney.

Great climate
Great beaches
Laid back lifestyle
High wages
No terrorists
No car jackers
Very little heavy metal music
Growing dance scene
Possessing a gun is illegal
No red necks

Why would you be anywhere else quite frankly

1 reason: your strict immigration policies! I lived in Melbourne for awhile and plan to move there someday if at all possible-I love it there. Australia has very strict standards for moving there. Good for you but bad for us Yanks. Although I am a gun nut...but seeing as no one has guns there its no big deal. I would sacrifice my right for safety, unlike here where I would not.

Alaska has the most libertarians.

Oh, good God NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. What an incredible arguement to stay away from one of the most incredible, and untouched (at this time) areas of America.

Totally off topic, but given the fact that B fold brought it up, this has got to bet one of the most attractive things for "yankees" to those wo(men) that live in the "south". I love hearing (in true southern accent) 'I'm a southern Bell'. The accent is irresistable.

Oh, and it works both north (Canadians, eh) and south (Wake Forest or....).

Whoa, what about grass..and no, not that grass. How much do you pay to turn your desert into grass? More than we pay to make our grass into snow? Interesting question................

I have no idea what you are trying to say. Please rephrase or explain what you're getting at.

No insult intended (as I've never been to AZ). Just trying to get at the fact that Phoenix is in the middle of the dessert and how much we (in the NE) would love to get the "dry heat". Plus how much the people of AZ pay in irrigation in comparison.

I'm mean honestly, you think AZ, you don't think grasslands.....

Lake Tahoe. Summers on the lake and great skiing in the winter.

Also an honorable mention to Monterey, CA. Expensive, but very beautiful.

you're one lucky bastard! it's a dream for me to live someday
in australia. well maybe i would choose melbourne. but it's def
hard to immigrate in australia, rigth?

Definitely agree PUSHING, Lake Tahoe is absolutely beautiful... winter or summer, a great big lake surrounded by mountains, with casinos and bars to boot, all the indoor and outdoor activities you could dream of, and the people are super friendly ...(well I live in LA , so people here are easy to beat) damn fakes! Also tops: St. John, USVI... totally amazing and peaceful if you just want R & R. The French Riviera (St. Tropez) enough said... and to raise a fam, I'd go back home to Connecticut.

How are you two hours from Vegas? What are you driving - 200 mph? It takes me about four and a half.

I don't know if I would say Phoenix is the best place to live in the world. But for now, for me, it is pretty damn good. Weather is awesome year round, I can play golf year round - what else is there?

I am thinking about relocating to the Phoenix area myself. As far as best places to live and work in the U.S. the new top 20 list from employment review is coming out. A few of the ones on the list that I can recall:

1. Sarasota, FL
2. Austin, TX

don't remember the order of the rest but a few were Denver, Phoenix, Colorado Springs, Atlanta, Ft. Worth...

as for anywhere in the world. I think it would be australia, I have seriously thought of trying to relocate there. I don't know if I will ever do it, but I hear it is a great place. It is kind of sad because the U.S. has so much potential to be the greatest place, but we accept to much crime as "normal", too many racial problems etc. I really think the racial divide will be the eventual undoing of america.

Australia is the best place I have been to so far. Dont pay much attention to those top lists in magazines. Sarasota is pretty and all but.....not all that. Austin is still in Texas so.... It is hard to immigrate to AU, you have to have allot of investment capital or at least a college degree and then you take a test. They are smart not letting any old moron in- unlike the US. The US is just getting worse as the years go by...I can tell you this: Those that are considering moving here to San Diego might want to rethink that. The average home is 350-500k and the job market pretty much sucks. :(

I agree with you about Australia...I have got the degrees and am seriously thinking about moving. we should limit immigration like australia, they only let in people who will contribute to their society. Smart Aussies.

Australia doeas not have as difficult an immigration policy as you may think.

It is actually easier if you are from an English speaking background, because the policy has moved towards favouring those who can support themselves and bring skills and qualifications which are unique to the country.

The thing to do is come out here on a working visa which is easy to do, and then see if you can get a job with a company which will sponsor you, or if you are already working for a US company, see if you can get a transfer out here.

It is easier for Canadians, because we have a cross-border agreement with Canada, who are similarly part of the commonwealth.

Give the Australian embassy in the U.S a call, or have a look at a website. I'm sure they would help you out.

Our immigration policy tended to heavily favour family reunion. There were alot of Greek and Italian migrants that came out in the 60's and 70's, and their family members were given right to come out as well. The policyn changed in the late 80's to favour more of a skill based policy, because we could not afford to keep bringing in unskilled, family related immigration. Being a very small country, we just don't have the resources to keep that type of policy going.

The result is however, that we have a very ethnically diverse country, but the majority of the migrants have taken on the Australian way of life, therefore we don't have the ethnic problems that you see in Germany, England, the US and France.

i agree. sydney is the place to be. taking the ferry to Manly to hit the beach or the train to Bondi Beach where the hardbodies hang out. going to Circular Quay for a pint, or shopping at the Rock, then heading off to a head shop on Darlinghurst Road (have they cleaned this area up since i've been there?) in Kings Cross.... Sydney's the place to be.

or South Bend, Indiana, where God Lives (NOTRE DAME)

Hey Cindy,

What's a head shop? Hairdresser?

When were you last here.

It's still a bit seedy around the Cross, but that's about as seedy as Sydney gets, which is pretty tame in comparison with most large cities.

Is there anything better than a ferry to Manly through the harbour? Priceless.
