best place to live- version 7.0

OK, where do you all think is the best place in the US to live? I have lived in Australia and would like to live there again at some point but in the meantime I am stuck in the good ole' US of A.

What makes the place you like to live so good? I recently relocated and have mixed feelings thus far. Lets hear some opinions!!!

I can't see myself living anywhere but here in Sydney.

Great weather, great beaches and natural beauty, comparatively low crime, easygoing lifestyle, cultural diversity, healthy economy etc.

Most people need to travel a long way to experience that. I feel priviledged to live it.

Here is why I have mixed feelings:
This is what I dont like about SD:

I hate my job- it sucks and I make peanuts. I haven't been able to get a good job since moving here(10months!!!!). I very much dislike being broke ass all the time :(

People here(the ones I have met anyway) are really flakey, rude(see my other thread about staring),stupid(for lack of a better word),self-involved,lazy,out of shape(surprising to me seeing as how my vision of So Cal was good looking buff people) and just plain weird. Keep in mind I moved from a major city so I am by no means a hick. I also am annoyed by the fact that EVERYONE here drives a huge ass jacked up monster truck with a calvin pissing on Bin Laden sticker, which I find ironic since their gas guzzling trucks are part of the reason we are depending on the middle east in the 1st place- but I digress.

It is retardedly expensive here- I pay $890 for a crap 1 bedroom dump where nothing ever gets fixed by the management. Of course I know what its like in Long Island,NYC and San Fran so I cant bitch too much about rents here. Now the rent would be no biggie if I could make decent money- I left where I was living making $4 more an hour then I make here and with no state tax like you have here. So..in comparison, making 13 an hour here- you bring home 365, that is just crap! You cant live on that when you rent is so much. Anyway, I wont even get into how people drive here. At least in other cities when you let someone into traffic they have the courtesy to thank you. Here you get nothing, like they expect you should let them in. Traffic here is getting really really bad. Dont go near the 5, bad traffic all the time.

Here is what I do like: the topography here is very cool, I really like the hills and mountains. Makes for a beautiful place. There is tons to do here as far as outdoor stuff. Haven't checked out the dance clubs yet but I imagine it is pretty much the same as anywhere else- somewhat lame, somewhat cool. The beach is pretty cool, sand isn't as nice as other places but overall nice. The weather is perfect, cant complain about that- except for the shitty marine layer that hangs over La Jolla all the time. The proximity to LA is good as well, which is why I really came here(need to be close to industry contacts). Wouldn't want to live in LA but need to be near it, right now anyway. So in summary, I think its beautiful here but the people leave a lot to be desired. I think if I can find a decent job I would be happier but all in all it has been a hell of a struggle here so far.

Man, I stayed in Melbourne for awhile with some friends that live there and I can honestly say that was the coolest most down to earth place I have ever been. Great nightlife,VERY cool people, lots of hotties- just an all around great place. I want to move there someday- more likely to Sydney. Wanna be penpals? haha. I cant wait to tour Australia(with my band). The only thing I dont like about australia is there is no peanut butter and no guns(I am a gun nut)- of course you dont need a gun there so that is fine. You do have the sweet cars- Skyline,WRX STi,Holden's- just a damn cool place. Cheers.

I was there for about 4 months- just chillin' with some people I know there. I totally know my way around Melbourne now. I stayed at Tolarno Hotel in St. Kilda- cool place. I went to a footy game, that was fun. Melbourne Kangaroos won. Got me a meat pie- yuck! You have some seriously hot girls there- so many hot blondes and Italians. Very few fat people compared to the US, that I noticed right away. I hear Sydney is more like NYC while Melbourne is like San Fran. It is funny cause most aussie's think the whole of the US is like San Francisco- haha. Not quite.

I would probably like Sydney more cause its a little faster pace.

True, the girls here are great. We live a very outdoors and active lifestyle which helps keep people trim. Haha, you had a meat pie. It is all shit in those things, but Aussie's love them. Did you have any vegemite?

Sydney has more to do than Melbourne in terms of beaches, the harbour and the weather is better year round. the club scene is good, although it tends to be seasonal, ie big in summer slow in winter.

Let's see how many people I can antagonize with this.

If you live in the U.S. you have to live on either coast. Simple as that. There's nowhere in the middle worth living, except maybe Chicago, which is too fucking cold. All those square states are bullshit, and I wouldn't live down south for any money.

I had the misfortune to live in Atlanta for a while and I hated it. It's not a city, it's a bunch of suburbs stuck together, and the people are very unfriendly compared to other places, which surprised me. I didn't even realize how much I hated it until the day I left when I was suffused with a transcendant joy which lasted a week. I should move back just so I can leave again!

Colorado is cool though.

I think San Diego is the coolest city in the U.S.

born and raised and still live in san diego, and love most of what it has to offer... but i don't dig too much on the beach culture and the retards it breeds (see above post re: shitty lifted trucks, etc)... was in new york city for two weeks last year and think that it's the place to be... but i've never lived there, so i don't really know for sure... san diego's all good for the time being...

I've lived in the southern us my entire life. The majority of it in Tennessee, and the early part in South Florida. No comparison among the two, i miss Miami. Currently im planning on going to Australia as well for some time to go to school/work. I have the option of Sydney, Melbourne, a couple smaller towns, and perth. I have read a lot about Perth, Sydney, and Melbourne, and they all sound great. Its great to hear opinions from those who live there and what they have to say.

Everyone seems to really like San Diego, maybe I am just meeting the wrong people here. I want to move to another planet!

NJ is ok place to live. Summers are too short. But close to Manhattan and easy to make money. Jersey Beaches are ok. Key is to make enough money and you can take a couple of quality vacations or weekend trips during the winter to Florida. I like it.

Huntsville AL
Trenton NJ
Galveston TX
Rochester NY
Anywhere in FL
Anywhere in WV
Anywhere in SD (South Dakota, not that hell hole San Deigo)

Any of those and you can't go wrong really.

You forgot Gary, Indiana.

How about Lynn, Massachusetts? or Worcester? Now that's a town.

NYC is nice to visit, but unless you're filthy rich, it's a terrible place to live.

will add though that the job market in san diego is not so good right now... doesn't make living in this expensive town any easier!

The job market here sucks big donkey balls! I took home twice as much living in Flori-duh. I have no idea how these people can afford their base level 500,000 homes. You can get yourself a nice little 2 bedroom fixer upper dump for that here. What a deal!!! Yeah right. Nice apartments are 900+ for 1 bedroom. Combine that with minimum wage jobs and you are broke. Taxes are high and so are fuel prices. Pretty similiar to NYC or San Fran I imagine.

I lived in Worcester as well as Maine and NH. Wouldn't move back but that is where I grew up- new england. At least it is easier to make a good buck in the northeast. Out here it is like pulling teeth to make 15 bucks an hour. Am I right SD people? I am looking for a new job now and all I see is telemarketing(EVIL!) and medical. Good if your in the med field but I am just trying to find something to pay the bills while I work on my rock star career....;)

Oh yeah and about Oz- there are like 20million people on the whole continent and they all live in either Sydney,Melbourne or Perth.

Now....back to building my rocket ship to leave this dumpy planet.........
