Hammett is nothing spectacular, but his solos go VERY well with the music. He makes them musical. He's very good at that.

I think that Joe Satriani blows him away for the same reason that I think Beck blows away Satriani. Feel baby! Sure I’m impressed with Via’s fret board dexterity, but that’s only a small part of it. JMHO.

I think overall it is too hard to say who is "The Best". Too many styles and factors involved. Speed, feeling, tecchnical ability, how he contributes to the over all song....etc. I love SRV for his feeling, that dude just bled guitar......hammett for his musical solos.....Dime for riffs.....Hendrix for inovation....Iommi for riffs...buckethead for speed......Satch and Vai for just being bad asses...
