Best car racing game for PS2

I am looking for a strictly racing game, like Project Gotham Racing on Xbox. Is there an equivalent for the PS2?

never played Project Gotham Racing, but i've been playing Gran Turismo 3 for the past week and love it. the origonal Gran Turismo is kick ass as well, but i've heard nothing good about Gran Turismo 2, so i never bought it.

steering wheel and pedals are essential to racing games. just makes it so much more fun. if you can, pick one up that has a shifter as well. just really lets you get into it more, IMO.

yeah grand turismo 3 had me hooked for months

dunno. i just got GT3. girlfriend got it for me for xmas along with the origonal. i loaned it to friends of hers and they've disappeared...bastards. it's nice to wait a while to buy video games though. she got GT3 for $15. much better than buying it when it came out for $49!
