for all you computer nerds, and or people that just know what a safe program is, what is the best Mcafee Norton....or any others, i am pretty computer savvy i do want one that is somewhat easy to configure but even if its hard, i can do it....help please k for responses

I am am a system admin and work with windows servers and desktops all day long, i can recommend you a good one i have installed on my machines and on some servers i have set up on the side.

www.avast.com

its VERY cheap, VERY low load on the machine and works fucking great.....and they give you a free trial period to try it before you pay for it

it got 5 start out of 5 by almost everyone that reviewed it.......i love it, and doesn't bog down the system like many others

i've used norton and macaffe and would take this hands down over either of those two

AVG Free Edition never did me wrong. I use that in conjunction with the free zonealarm and mozilla firefox to browse.

agreed

I hate software firewalls though.

hey drrman, didnt you get your degree in mechanical engineering?

im interning as an assistant computer network admin and they have trend micro, or something like that. very very good, no boggs or nothing.
I have heard AVG anti-virus is pretty good and it is free.

i use kaspersky
it is russian
but the canadian intels have started to use it
and most of nato
and rumour has it the american will soon
you can configure it to check for update hourly
and if there is one available they are one of the first
norton and mcfee use too much resources
kasperky antivirus and antihacker and antispam suite uses less than 1 mb ram unless scanning
and even if i turn off the antihacker firewall it still blocks invasions

You know you don't need zone alarm if you have a router (hardware firewall), right? Zonealarm caused me problems way back when.

I use AVG.

I like to know what programs are trying to access and choose which ones I will allow

its not the outbound connections you need to worry so much about, its the inbound ones, and he is right, a router will block all ports unless you open them specifically for certain applications

thanks guys, goign to try the avast

you won't be sorry, they have great updates and i think they have a free version for desktops, but the free version only has email support, no phone support, but who cares

depends on if you are just looking for antivirus software or full internet with tight security for firewalls/routers ...
I just stick with Norton Internet Security due to work rules setup

MAN....norton internet security is a joke bro........it causes WAY more problems that it helps prevent.......i've seen countless machines that norton's internet security was killing the system

Im telling you this for your own information bro, not trying to be a dick, but software firewalls are a joke, they do nothing but hinder system performance and are NOT reliable

not sure you know what you are talking about with the "tight security for firewalls/routers"..........norton internet security is nothing more than a very bad software firewall, it has NOTHING to do with a hardware firewall or router

The best bet is to put your system behind a true router, rather it be wireless or a regular router, this is a hardware firewall.....a "true" firewall..........much safer, much easier, and better system performance......a router can be bought for less than 50 bucks easily, and is WELL worth the safety it provides

So you are saying even zone alarm? sucks? It says it has blocked nearly 300,000 inbound attempts, so I assume its doing something right.

bro, those inbound attempts are NOT all true attempts to hack into your system......i could run a simple port scanner over an ip range that included yours and you would see it as a hit for me trying to attack you......ALL those hits/attacks you are seeing are NOT people actually attacking your computer................if you had a router between your computer and the internet as i recommend EVERYONE have, the scanner and probe would find nothing before it ever got to your NIC

but to answer your question, no zone alarm is not garbage, but it does use up resources and would not even be necessary with a router in place.

Its just a good practice to NEVER put a machine directly on the internet without a router or hardware firewall in place

drrman,
what brand of routers do you prefer??

pretty much anything but d-link....lol...i have NEVER been impressed at all with any d link products and they all seem to fail eventually.

Best bang for the buck is a linksys, its my favorite of the internet wireless routers, next i would choose a netgear.....both are pretty good, the low end linksys has more options you may want to use later on than the low end netgears.....but both are pretty good

i posted many times that avast is very very good especially since it's for free. if you feel like spending money than you will like webroots.
