Benz owners...

sl55 amg or clk55 amg are the ones to get.
the older sl500 like the one in the pic you put up is a pretty nice car though.

I really like most Benzes, but my next car will have 4 door no matter what.

The only way those cars could be prettier is if you could see my reflection in them.

I'd prefer owning a hyndai than to have to endure such an act ;)

Ive owned neither but driven both. the CLK's handling seemed a bit tighter than what I had experienced in the sl500, but i was drunk at the time so it might have been justy an illusion.

Overall though, the slk500 is just so goddamn pretty that I dont see any other option.

you gotta get the 05's , 06's if you getting a benz. those pics you posted are of played out older models.

You obviously have no clue what a new sl costs.

NJjuice22 said:
oh I do. I figured if you wanted those cars you could afford to go new. if not those are hella-nice used cars.

the sl500s are mid 90's.

sl600's are 120's.

The clk is a 2001

the slk is a 2000 with 37k miles on it.

I wont pay 90 grand for ANY car

I drove an SLK and the handling was just insane.

The slk also has the al glass panaromic top as well as a cloth one

Im really into the silver but I prefer the convertible

Im trying to locate an slk in silver as well

I'm almost 100% positive thats what the owner of the company had up for sale about a month ago. It sat in his race boat shop for damn near 3 years with out barely being driven so he decided to sell it.

I rode with him in it ONE time to drop him off at the airport.. I drove it back to the office and I must admit it handled awesome. He took great care of it.. barely drove the thing , would take it out wash/wax it and start it ... drive it around the block and then it went back in the building.

You already know how I feel, sir. I can buy anything and I avoid the german cars enthusiastically. Lexus SC430 is better if you want a 2dr or a coupe. I have one and I love it. I've driven many Benzes and find them to handle well, to be tight, and to be about 12% more comfy than BWs, which means they are like bringing a seat cushion to a football game, instead of just getting the stadium seat.

Silver on silver is about as ugly as ugly gets, avoid that at all costs. They'll probably be 5-10% cheaper because it is such an undesirable color. Those styles of MB on those years are fucking hideous, so boxy on the SL. The CLK is a little better but those tail lights are simly gross..

Last thing I'll add is that if you're looking at 2001s, you're taking on maintenance risks - remember total cost of ownership. Better off with something 2004-new, even if you can't get your pretty little hood ornament. Get an Acura or Lexus or something from 03 04 - now.

The girlies will still like you.

I do not own one but I know my cars.

The 500 has been known to have hydraulic issues with the retractable tops and some micro switch problems. The 430 a better choice.

lol, whats up with you and lexus? they might be well engineered, its a shame they are so f*cking ugly. park a lexus next to a toyota camry and you cant tell the difference, lol.

The boxy style of that slk500, in my mind, is one of the most beautiful body designs Ive ever seen.

Youre right about silver though- black with saddle interior is the way to go.

I do have three lexuses so I am kinda biased. :) But then again, I've considered every up-market car there is before deciding.

I have the SC and the RX, so there aren't really comparable toyotas The Solara look slike an SC rip off, which is sort of is. The 06 GS is a completely different body style too, so you're incorrect again.

Black and saddle is a little better, yeah. Boxy style..if you like it, you like it. Point is, if he has to buy a car that's 5 years old to get one he can afford, buy something else.

Spend that extra cash on some good tacos.

WAIT.....I'll save you some effort:

you're ( P ) Pronunciation Key (yr; yr when unstressed)

Contraction of you are.

and...

your ( P ) Pronunciation Key (yr, yĂ´r, yr; yr when unstressed)
adj. The possessive form of you.
Used as a modifier before a noun: your boots; your accomplishments.
A person's; one's: The light switch is on your right.
Informal. Used with little or no sense of possession to indicate a type familiar to the listener: your basic three-story frame house.

The lesson for today is that, if one wants to attempt to flame someone, one should have at LEAST a working knowledge of 5th grade English.

Now, go have a seat Sally.

SC = Toyota Soarer

LOL @ SC430 owner calling the CLK ugly. SC is a nice car, but the styling is a mess, looks like someone took an SLK and stuck an air hose up its butt.

Fortunately, you don't have to look at it from the driver's seat. :)

wow.....it's a bit pretentious for you to assume anything about me, you ass Nozzle.....

I think dropping 90 grand on ANY car is the definition of absurd....especialy knowing that you take a 20% hit the minute you drive it from the dealership.

hey man, I don't care how you spend your cash, you know this. It's just a general statement.

New cars are a scam, so is getting a payment on a car that's 5 years old. By the time you pay off the loan it'll be 10 years old, so you'll get to experience the severe depreciation that comes with old old cars, and still be making a payment.

Your move.

Mr dB,

you must own stock in Daimler Corp. LOL at the air hose comment, not sure what you meant by not seeing it from the driver's seat.

FWIW, Lexus sucks at customer service in my experience.

I completely agree with the maintenance issues on the older high end european cars. Definitely keep that in mind.
As for the lexus vs benz or bmw. I think the german cars have a bit more character than their japanese competitors. Look at the older lexus sc400's - compared to the same year benz sl500..

LMAO

Matt Matt Matt....again - you are making the assumption that I NEED a loan to purchse either car.

I believe that's Checkmate.

I know it can be difficult for you...but really - stop making an ass of yourself.

One of my clients just bought a black 2006 Porsche Carrera GT for like $475,000. It will be lucky to have 1000 miles on it 4 years from now. All his cars sit in a garage in Houston...

Personal taste like everything else of course. I hate the styling of some of the older model Benzes, ironically both of the ones that are being discussed in this thread. I'm with Matt on hating the boxy styling look. It's pretty much why I have always hated Volvo.

But for what it's worth the SLK is a hardtop convert, which would make me lean towards it.

If you want a convert what about a new BMW 6 series (love the look of them). Orrrrr a Mini Cooper convert!! Razor sharp handling!

Can you tell what the exterior styling of a car looks like when you're sitting in it?

I was writing shit for general consumption until you wanted to make it an exchange, so fuck it, I'll be unabashedly direct:

99.9999% of the time, people who want a "status" car but only look at older ones are doing it because they want the brand, not the best value. They want to own the hood ornament, not make a smart purchase. They only way they can afford the hood ornanment is to get an older model.

Maybe you're that 1 in a million exception.

Look at me, I have a Benz.

99.9999% of people who buy new upmarket cars don't sweat the depreciation that much. (Those who do, lease. They are called poseurs). Those who pay $100K+ for a new car do it because the price is secondary to the car.

You've already demonstrated a price / depreciation sensitivity that is uncharacteristic of a $100K car buyer. Maybe, yet again, you are the 1 in a million buyer. But I don't think so. I think your ultimate guiding principle is price, and you feel silly admitting that you're overpaying just to feel good about owning something.

Is that better? Do you like direct better? Do us both a favor and don't assume I ever give a shit what you do.

Hardly. I'm not even much of a fan. I don't think I'd own one even if I could afford it. If I was going Kraut, I'd be much more likely to buy a BMW or Porsche. But I think I'm too spoiled by the utter painlessness of owning and operating a Japanese car.

Don't tell me The Shadow going get rid of his Chick Magnet yellow Miata!!!!???

Disclaimer: I am not assuming The Shadow has to sell his cute yellow Miata to pay for his new car.

Well....you got the "shit" part right.

I didnt begin any of this.....keep that in mind.

Bottom line is that you think that I feel "silly" about overpaying for a car brand that you, personally, do not care for.

Since you made the claim....tell me what I "should" pay for either car.

I want to write that number down and head to the dealership and tell the salesperson that "Matt said this amount is too high".

..and if you think the 20% mark isnt accurate - do some research.

Option out a 500 sl new.

Then price it out, same options, as a trade-in or private sale. Let me know what you come up with.

..you comments are laughable at best matt.

Is price a guiding factor for purchases for 99.99% of the public??

Yes....of course it is.

Woupld you pay sticker price for a Lexus of your choice??

I dont think so....didnt you tell the story in Atlanta(and on EF I believe) about car shopping and pinning the salesman down when he commented he wasnt making anything on the vehicle as you were negotiating the price??

Yes..I believe you did.

So, don't be hypocritical about the situation, simply b/c you dont like the brand of the car.

Shadow,

Search for a CLK55 AMG, or CL55 AMG (if you need four doors), 2000-2002 (W208 body style for the CLK).

You will love this car. 350hp, and handles like a dream....

Yopu can find 2002 CLK55 AMG's out there with less than 25k miles, and factory warranty left, as well as being eligible for the factory 100k warranty extension. You will find the pricing to be between 30-40k, for what was originally a 75k car. The sheer driving pleasure is awesome, not to mention the looks, and gasps in the parking lots...

Do yourself a favor and find one and drive it.........

Remember.........AMG

One of the things I like about both cars are the low miles.

the sl had less than 33k on it...and it has the tranferable 100k warranty...so the maintenace issues mentioned about were a non-issue

I dont like the old SL500s. That CLK430 is not that bad but maintenance is a pain in the ass. If you cant find an old AMG it doesnt really matter because yoyu could tune that one to AMG specs or even better, Brabus. I guess you really like Benz, perosnally I wouldnt pay for an old Benz since there're so many options out there (Lexus, infiniti, BMW, Acura...).

both cars have the 100k deal...so I dont think it would be much of an issue.

I like the look of the 2002 amg....performance-wise, the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times are comparable to the sl......6.1 0-60 for the amg versus 6.2 for the amg.

I also ran across a 67 Camaro and a 65 Vette that I am considering

[QUOTE..... Lexus sucks at customer service in my experience.[/QUOTE] i strongly disagree!! after the slow and arrogant "zher ess NO problemn wid 'da machine" customer service at the local benz and bmw dealers; lexus was a pleasant change. work was done correctly and promtly, the car was always washed and often vaccumed on the nside.

That's the SRT-8 and to be honest, this truck is just a poseur/wannabe Cayenne TT toy. it doesnt have the same off-road capabilities as the other Grand Cherokee. Dont buy that crap. Btw I saw a some nice used Benz at the local dealer today, among them was a C32 AMG 2004 with 15 000 miles on it for just $45k. That's one nice piece of ass with full warranty. I'm sure you can find the same.

Im just amazed that the jeep is that quick.

The prices locally for amg's are a bit steep imo....2001 with 45,000 on it is running 48k

a month ago i was looking at a few clks....test drove a couple 55amgs and felt tight but sure had some oomp in it....think from what i saw on a benz forum, there is no oil dipstick on the 55amg?? they were 02/03 models for around mid/high $30s w/40k miles...

then looked at the lexus IS350 nice, but $40k was alot for the price...so waiting off till summer/spring to decide what to get....really want another landcruiser, but gas is a bear on it...

whatever you get, i'm sure you'll be happy w/it...

"tuning" to AMG specs would include replacing the engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, exhaust, the computer, tires, and wheels....

These are all different for the AMG vehicle....

Look on Ebay motors for price comparisions....just saw a 2002 CLK55 in PA with 18k miles on it and buy it now at 36k. Don't buy on ebay, but then call the dealer and make a deal based on their rep, and bonding, etc....you can have a car shipped for around 400 bucks.

For the CLK 430, all you have to do is to add a S/C (Kleeman kit) , change the suspension, swap the exhaust (Eisenhaus racing serie) and update your ECU. The transmission is the same (back then i believe the CLK had the Touchshift, no speedshift yet), brake rotors are slightly bigger (for the CLK) and they're fitted with 4 pistons calipers. I'd just add a set of Brembo GT front and leave it stock (rear). AMG brake sets from the dealer are just overpriced. Of course this wont make it a real AMG but that would be close enough. Be original and take the Brabus route !

IF i ever spent that kind of money on a car, it had damn well be reliable. perfect. trouble free.

according to jd power's owner's surveys.....that lets out benz and BMW.

lexus is our generation's reference standard. as was cadillac for our parents and packard was for our grandparents.
