Bent Over Rows (form ?)

Hey Ladies,

Quick question about the bent over rows. First of all, why is that olympic bar so damn thick? It's a bit of an adjustment for me after using my cap barbell set.

Anywho, for bent over rows, are my hands spose to be placed over the bar or under? I did them under the other day, yet I seen in a magazine with the hand placement over.

You can do them both ways.

Right now I'm doing them underhand.

You can do both - the diff grip hits diff muscles. The important thing is to keep a tight form so you don't strain your back.

I do overhand & also use the EZ bar instead of the standard......just add more weight to it....

Thanks ladies. I'm gonna give it a whirl over hand, but I think I may compromise my form. I'm still getting used to the thickness of the Olympic bar. Thanks so much for responding.

Yup, I like those too. Those are pretty easy for me. Just looking for variety ya know. Thanks for the suggestion MM.

Well if you are going them dynamically (which you should be), then you will know that there is no way you could physically use an underhand grip. FYI, if you don't know, dynamic means parallell to the ground.

PM madcow2 if you want a detailed explanation of why rows should be paralell. or maybe if I have time, ill find the explanation.

This thread would be a good starting point.. further more, if you hook yourself up to an EMG to measure stimulus, you would quickly realize that parallell activiates the lats way more.

How about hooking me up with a picture, because I've persued the thread, and although I was pretty swift in school with my mathematics, I still need a visual. All of that is going over my head.

Better yet, I was doing it just like this, but underhand grip

Is this correct?

Thanks for your help.

Even though the exercise can be done with both grips, overhand grip is recommended though because if not done properly the underhand grip can damage your wrists. Anyway keep proper form and remember to contract the lats.

I think as I go up in weight I'm going to be forced to switch grips, as it will become too much for my wrists/forearms to handle. I even drive under handed! Thanks Nikkita.
