Bedtime Protein Question

mendo

New member
I posted this in the AS forum cause I know everyone here takes protein before bed, and nobody ever goes to the diet forum anyway.

I'm a full time college student, so I have to change my eating and workout schedule every quarter as my class schedule keeps changing. So far I've managed to eat approx. every 2-3 hrs for the past few years...unless I'm in a 3-4 hr lab. My only problem has been my bedtime shake...

I find that I have trouble sleeping and I still feel full in the morning if I try to drink a 40 gram casein/egg/flax monster right before bed... How much protein do you guys get before bed? How soon before you sleep do you take it? Can I get away with a smaller shake...like maybe 20g or something? Do I have to drink it imediately before I sleep...what about an hr or two before bed?

I drink a shake with about 35 grams about an 1/2 hour before bed

seems to keep me "fuller" in the morning

I concur. 30 min. b4 bed and I down 35 g of casein. Yummy.

fuller muscles I think

Also if i am hungry before bed i can not sleep

I have a gym at work and I get out of work at 11 so sometimes I will do a small bodypart or do cardio so i like to replenish after training.

i only eat a bowl of oatmeal before training in the morning so everybit helps

I've been pretty much doing the same as you guys...but I can't seem to get used to sleeping with a bit lump of casein in my stomach...

Man up broham. It's mind over matter!!!

damn i wish a shake that small would keep me full, i down a 40+ gram egg/casein/whey/fish oil/pb shake before bed and i wake up at least twice during the night starving so i eat cottage cheese till im not hungry and go back to bed.

You're a mutant. I get that way sometime when I'm on EQ.

you guys are pissing away money at shakes. Take 1 1/2 cups cottage cheese add maybe like a scoop of whey to that for flavor, and eat like a 1/4cup of almonds and you will be full as shit.

right on with this
i eat some cottage cheese and some almonds or anpb before bed sometimes i will take a shake about 40 grams whey and casein

I eat 2.5 cups cottage cheese before bed then wake up 3 hours later and drink a 40g egg/casein/whey shake. Shake is same price as cottage cheese...

I suck down a good 70g's or so of egg/casein mix, with some atkins milk. This is about 10 minutes before I go to bed also. I wake up starving usually at least once a night, I usually just drink some water or crystal light, but now I have the idea of having 8ounces of liquid egg whites instead. 26g's of egg protein, AND helps my stomach and makes me less thirsty. Being full is NOT a problem at bedtime till morning. During bulking in the daytime, it's HELL, i'm full to the point of being sick all the time, but dieting, or even just when it's time to sleep, after a few hrs I'm hungry no matter what.

So you can get a 2 protein shakes for 2.15 like you can get enough cottage cheese for two nights?

I down 55g as I'm laying in bed

40g casein on my way up to bed. And on the side what you said about a long lab. Kong bars are perfect if you end up in another one of those (I got one next semester)

Alright you freaks...I'm just gonna say fuck the sleep and stick to at least 40g before bed. I gotta adapt eventually right? Its better not to cut my protein short anyway.

Kongs are good. Been bringing some of those new Designer Bonanzas with me to lab also, they taste great. I have labs all fucking summer...

I do the exact same thing bro! and I toss in about 10almonds, some splenda, and some ice.....nice thick shake!

Anyone ever tried muscle milk or any of the new protein mass gainers at night w/o hoarding fat?

Agree with you 100% Bro. You have it completely figured out and I'm glad I'm not alone on this one.

Never hated any company in all my life until I wised up to supplement companies and how they're taking the piss out of BB's telling us exaggurated B.S about all the supplements we need just to take more of our hard earned cash.

right whole foods are always better than suppliments. What a lot of guys on here don't understand is that suppliments are meant to SUPPLIMENT your diet. They are not meant to BE your diet.

Dude, you hit the nail on the head. Congratulations!!! I'm a big proponent of whole foods. You should only supplement what you can't get enough of in whole foods. Sometimes it is cost-effective to use the supps.

I like my egg/casein blend, with some natty PB for healthy fats. Egg/casein takes like 6hrs to digest, and I have some fats too, lasts most of the night. If I do wake up hungry, I suck down 20g's of liquid egg whites now, takes like 10 seconds, I love it!

Yes my shake is 40g protein per serving and 30 servings. Costs $27. Thats $0.90 per shake, less expensive than cottage cheese. Another way to put it my shakes are just over $.02/gram protein and cottage cheese is $.04/gram protein.

True.. the only protein supps I eat are out of convenience... like not having a fridge in my room so I leave a shake next to my bed or right after practice having shake in locker...

liquid egg whites taste like shit but so does everything else we eat... Just open your throat and let it go down...

Also if you eat uncooked eggwhites w/o the yellows you need a biotin supplement. Atleast 25mg/eggwhite.

So what do you guys think of ON's anabolic milk or Muscle milk pre-bed?

Even if I'm bulking, my goal for my bedtime meal is quality protein/good fats only...not calories in general. I would personally never use muscle milk before bed, but thats just me.

Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't Jay Cutler wake up every 3hrs during the nite to eat. If it is a good source of Protein ie: Cottage Cheese or a Protein Shake your body is going to use the protein for muscle recovery and strength. So I say drink up

Wrong try again. I'm talking casein protein not the regular shit whey you can get for $27. You're going to lose this argument so its best you stop right now. With the protein you're also no adding in the additional cost of water etc...

2lb jug of Optimum Nutrition 100% Casein Protein, $25.99 from Bulk Nutrition $25.99/30 = $.87 per 23g protein serving .. water is damn near free for the amount used to make a shake. I do believe you lose.

Ok lets analyze this since you don't seem to understand. 25.99 + Shipping which will be over $5. So thats at least $31 dollars for 30 servings. At only 23g a serving you want two servings before bed. That will only last you 15 days. Water is not free so don't even go into that. You are correct on that last one. Keep wasting money not consuming real food.

Nice edit of the quote .. only losers play that game. No shipping required, I can get it local for $27 with no tax .. cottage cheese is only slightly higher in protein per cup and more expensive, to get the same protein you have to eat 2 cups of it .. you still lose.

Water, dunno where you live but my monthly water bill for my house is ~$30 with a wife and 2 kids .. basically free for the amount used to make a shake.

Damn....70 grams, do you seriously take any enzymes or bacteria cultures with that?

I have read so many times, as well as heard from nutrionists (btw - many don't seem to understand bodybuilders) that it so difficult to digest excssive protein in one serving (i.e - anything in excess of about 50 grams). Vince Gironda preached this... Is this BS?

I cannot imagine how you are not bloated or wake up with stomach ache in the middle of the night! More power to you if you can do it.....AMEN.

Keep in mind you are the only one name calling.
 Not everyone can get local for $27 with no tax. Local here its 32.99 with no tax EVERYWHERE. There is a walmart everywhere in the U.S and everyone has access to that. Your argument is ludicrous. Cottage cheese is not more expensive you get 40g of cottage cheese in 1 1/2 cups. Fuck drinking tap water. :mix: If you want to argue which will keep you more full at night we can go into that to.
