If you're worth it.. I always tell employers that my salary range is well over market but I'm worth it (even though it's just BS). That works too.

I pretty much always reccomend that people counter offer their original offer asking for 10% more.

The logic is this, worst case, they say not, you won't get your offer revoked.

In most cases they will meet you halfway, if not give up the full asking. Usually HR reps can up an offer by 10% without submittintg the offer to get signed and approved all over again by the higher ups.

Basically its a no lose situation for you, you are counter offering with HR, and the hiring manager, you co workers will never know that you counter offered and if the company gave you more or not.

I had an initial offer (low balled anyway) bumped 25% and I still turned it down because of the 90 minute commute each way. Plus it was a 4 day work week. I would have had no life...not that I do anyway.

4 day work week?? that sounds like a huge plus to me!

I work 5 days a week, try to do one of those from home when possible, but now that I manage and entire team that is difficult, need to be on site daily.

4 10-hour days each w/3 hours commute time? No thanks, especially when the boss knows they can call you in for a 5th and think you won't bitch because you're still getting a 2 day weekend.

Good job man, there's more to life than work. Spending all your time at the job and in a car is a waste.

scenario #1 - you match your salary to the market rate. normal.

scenario #2 - you match your salary above the market rate due to your contribution and necessity to the company. normal. BUT be expected now to earn that increase by being a flawless awesome worker. no longer long lunch breaks.

i love office monkeys. they don't enjoy the pride of what they do - just how big that check is every 2 weeks. lol.
