How does my barber make money? I go to him every 7 days for a $18 haircut. Does he keep the full $18? Or does he split this with the owner?

Also, is tipping him $2 too low? I mean...I'm NOT going every 3-4 weeks like most guys do. I am going every 6-7 days, shit adds up you know! LOL

Depends on the shop. Usually yes. Barber pays for his\her chair.
$2 is a shitty tip if hes your go to barber and cuts well.
Try a new barber and when they chop you up, you'll be much more appreciative of a reliable cut.

I have a Vietnamese lady that cuts my hair. Haircut $7 tip $5. Because she's perfect every Time.
Piece of mind knowing im not walking out in public looking like Jim Carey in Dumb and dumber is worth the 80% tip.

Ok, so when I pay my dude $18, he then gives a portion of that $18 to the owner of the shop? Which by the way, the owner is there everyday, and cuts hair as well as he too is a barber.

I read online that it says to tip someone 15% of the total bill. 15% of $18 is 2.70, so I just give him $2

Brother, your haircut is $7?!!!! Fuck!! I wish my haircut was $7! My haircut is $18!!! And I go to this guy every 6-7 days on the dot!

How often do you go to get your haircut? Once every 3-4 weeks? If I could get a haircut once every 3-4 weeks and pay ONLY $7, I'll gladly give a $20 tip each and every time. LOL

I am coughing up $80 (tip included) per month. Am I still being a cheap ass?

By the way, these barbers don't make money other than on the tip and tip "alone"????

In general yes.
Some barber shops run different. Some get hourly wage, some run on # of cuts per day. Some run on both.

I try to get a cut every week. Usually every ten days or so.
Theres some spots that charge $20 here. But I'd rather go to the Vietnamese ladys.

Damn bro. I don't know if I'm being a cheap ass here. $18 per 6-7 days add up $72 per month! Not including the additional $2 per week. So for a total of $80 per month!

Its weird though because this one barber I go to, when I give him $20, he goes "himself" to the cash register, puts the $20 inside the register, pulls out $2, and puts that into his pocket. All the barbers that work at this one joint do this. They don't seem to keep a record of who made what money. They all just put money in the register.

How did he get paid? On just the $2? No way! Can't be. If that were the case then why would he take me in every week? Why would he cut my hair carefully and do a great job? He never rushes, and he's always in a good mood to see me. He never has that look on his face as if saying, "great, here comes this $2 paying mofo again". Lol

I did notice yesterday while getting a haircut that the guy in front of me gave his barber a $6 tip. The thing is that this guy was last there 4 weeks ago! So that means that the guy in front of me pays $18 plus a $6 tip every 4 weeks. That's just $24 a month. Me? I'm spending $80 a month. That's more than 3 times the amount.

I used to go to a barber that would charge me $12 per cut. Since it was only $12, I would give him a $5 tip. Now that I'm going to this new guy and paying $18 PLUS a tip is really costly!

I can understand your situation. You pay your barber $7 every 10 days. So for a total of $21 a month? Its VERY easy and affordable for you to tip VERY well.

As for me, its totally different. In 14 days I've already spent $36! Not including the tip.

I just hope my barber doesn't think I'm being a cheap ass. Its just...HOLY HELL! I'm spending $72 a month! Not including the tips. Lol

Most barbers pay a monthly chair fee and then they just keep everything else they make... $2 is a really shitty tip... you have obviously not worked in hospitality to understand but 15% is really unacceptable... you should at least do 20%... $18 for a haircut is actually not that expensive... fuck, I've paid $40 before in l.a...

L.A. is different bro. I live in a shitty neighborhood, this is not L.A.

You have a good amount of hair on your head (from what I can see in your avatar). Do you get a haircut every 3-4 weeks?

I go every 6-7 days. My shit adds up quick!

That was just an example... $15-18 is pretty universal... I go every two weeks... of course I miss the 10-12 haircut price but that's just not realistic... I understand it adds up but I know personally if I was getting a customer tipping me shitty then I wouldn't put as much effort into it...

I do the same thing you do every week. My hair cut is 15 and I leave 4 or usually 5 dollar tip. My guy does a great job and bc I am loyal and always tip well he will throw me a free cut from time to time. Just saying

2 cuts per hour x 40 hours per week = 80 hair cuts.
Say you charge $18 and average $4 tips that's 22 x 80 = 1760 / week = $91,520 / yr. GROSS.

Say you pay $1000/month to rent a chair in a shop, you could be making $79k before taxes - not too bad. But you would have to be pretty much always have a guy in the chair and a guy waiting with no breaks to get to that.

If I ever gave my barber 2 bucks for a tip, I wouldn't want to show my face there again :)

bump it up to 3. I understand the weekly cuts add up, but an extra buck a week isn't going to kill you. ($4/month)

Well I pay 14 for my hair cut, 3 bucks for goatee trim and 19 for shave. So a total if 36 bucks and then 10 dollar tip. The dude spends like a hour with me and always does a good job. I go around every 3 weeks.
